    Abstract: An illustrative data storage management system comprises “awareness logic” that executes on computing devices hosting storage management components such as storage manager, data agent, media agent, and/or other storage management applications. The illustrative awareness logic operates within each of these illustrative components, e.g., as a thread within processes of the storage management component, such as storage management core process, file identifier process, log monitoring process, etc. The awareness logic monitors the targeted process over time and triggers remedial action when criteria are met. Certain vital statistics of each process are collected periodically and analyzed by the illustrative awareness logic, such as CPU usage, memory usage, and handle counts. Criteria for corrective action include rising trends based on local minima data points for one or more vital statistics of the process. Other criteria include exceeding a threshold based on a logarithm function of the collected data points.

    Abstract: An illustrative data storage management system comprises a management database that stores administrative preferences and system configurations, as well as results and/or statistics of completed secondary storage operations, i.e., information needed by the system to protect customers' data and to track and recover the protected data, including secondary copies such as backup copies, archive copies, etc. The disclosed data storage management system is configured to protect its own system data subject to a very aggressive (short) Recovery Point Objective (RPO), by using an innovative infrastructure that enables the system's storage manager to fail over to any number of other failover destination storage managers, each one comprising a destination management database. An illustrative database granularly tracks whether each and every transaction log file has been successfully applied to each and every destination management database to synchronize with the source management database.

    Abstract: An improved information management system that implements a staging area or cache to temporarily store primary data in a native format before the primary data is converted into secondary copies in a secondary format is described herein. For example, the improved information management system can include various media agents that each include one or more high speed drives. When a client computing device provides primary data for conversion into secondary copies, the primary data can initially be stored in the native format in the high speed drive(s). If the client computing device then submits a request for the primary data, the media agent can simply retrieve the primary data from the high speed drive(s) and transmit the primary data to the client computing device. Because the primary data is already in the native format, no conversion operations are performed by the media agent, thereby reducing the restore delay.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for creating local, or on-premises, secondary copies of data managed and/or stored in online repositories are described. In some embodiments, the systems and methods perform a single application programming interface (API) call to a web application level of an online repository to transfer a copy of the data stored in the online repository from the online repository to a local site of a local information management system. Via the local site, the systems and methods access the copy of the data at the site of the local information management system, generate a metadata manifest file that associates metadata files and data files within the copy of the data of the site of the local information management system, and transfer the data files and the metadata manifest file to a media agent for storage to a secondary storage device of the local information management system.

    Abstract: Techniques disclosed herein are well suited to restoring deduplicated backup data from cloud-based storage and from multi-node replicated files systems, and they also improve performance in more traditional data storage technologies. Pre-restore steps include analysis of deduplication indexes to identify data segments that are stored consecutively on storage media. Reading data in aggregate runs of consecutively stored data segments reduces interactions with storage media that hosts the deduplicated data and speeds up retrieval. Parallel reads from multiple storage devices in multi-node replicated file systems also speed up retrieval. An illustrative enhanced media agent pre-fetches data (stored in deduplicated form) in anticipation of read requests that are expected in the restore operation. The pre-fetched data is temporarily stored locally at the media agent, which is responsible for interfacing with storage media and is further responsible for orchestrating the disclosed techniques within an illustrative data storage management system.

    Abstract: An information management system allows a user to search through a secondary copy of data, such as a backup, archive, or snapshot without first retrieving the secondary copy of data. Instead, the system constructs lightweight data that can be displayed to a user as a representation of the search results. Lightweight data may include metadata or other information that identifies data included in the secondary copy of data. The lightweight data may be perceived as being the secondary copy of data and allow a user to browse through search results. Once the user identifies a search result that is of interest, information in the lightweight data can be used to retrieve the secondary copy of data. Because lightweight data may have a smaller file size than the file size of the secondary copy of data, the latency of performing a search may be reduced.
