Abstract:
Disclosed here are compositions rich in omega-7 fatty acids, including palmitoleic acid, and products rich in omega-7 fatty acids derived from algal biomass. The algae and/or compositions rich in omega-7 fatty acids may be used in products or as ingredients of products. Methods and systems for increasing the production or concentration of omega-7 fatty acids, and isolating omega-7 fatty acids from algal biomass are also disclosed herein.
Abstract:
Methods of producing fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) using a direct transesterification process are described. The direct transesterification process uses low levels of chemical solvents, acid catalysts, and heating energy to produce the FAEE in a method with increased efficiency in a co-solvent system. The FAEE produced may be used in a variety of products including health, beauty, nutraceutical, and cosmetic products.
Abstract:
A method for separating neutral lipids from plant material, in particular, intact algal cells, using an amphipathic solvent set and a hydrophobic solvent set. Some embodiments include dewatering intact algal cells and then extracting neutral lipids from the algal cells. The methods provide for single and multistep extraction processes which allow for efficient separation of algal neutral lipids from a wet algal biomass while avoiding emulsification of extraction mixtures. The neutral lipids are removed after first removing a polar lipid fraction and a protein fraction. These neutral lipids can be used to generate renewable fuels as well as food products and supplements.
Abstract:
Methods of culturing microorganisms in non-axenic mixotrophic conditions are disclosed. A method of culturing microalgae mixotrophically and controlling bacterial contamination with an acetic acid/pH auxostat system is specifically described. Methods of culturing microalgae mixotrophically with an increased productivity through an increase in oxygen transfer to the culture, and controlling bacterial contamination with an oxidative agent are also described.
Abstract:
Described herein are systems, methods, and apparatuses for aggregating microorganism in an aqueous suspension. In particular, are systems, methods, and apparatuses that apply an electrical field and/or acoustic energy to an aqueous suspension comprising microorganisms as the aqueous suspension follows a flow path to cause aggregation of the microorganisms. The electrical field may be continuous or pulsed. In some embodiments, the flow path for the aqueous suspension may vary.

Some embodiments include dewatering intact algal cells and then extracting neutral lipids from the algal cells. The methods provide for single and multistep extraction processes which allow for efficient separation of algal neutral lipids from a wet algal biomass while avoiding emulsification of extraction mixtures. Abstract:
Disclosed are techniques and systems for producing microbials having anaplerotic oils that are rich in odd-chain fatty acids, and other beneficial components, at higher concentrations than those present in other natural dietary sources of OCFA, at lower cost, and higher production yield. Further, disclosed are examples of incorporation of these higher concentration OCFA products into food for human and non-human animal consumption.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of preparing a defatted animal dairy product enriched with microbial anaplerotic oil and animal dairy products rich in odd-chain fatty acids for consumption by human and non-human animals. Also provided are animal dairy products rich in odd-chain fatty acids (OCFA) for consumption by human and non-human animals, the animal dairy product comprising defatted raw animal milk and microbial anaplerotic oil rich in OCFA.
