    Abstract: An optical module includes a beam-tilting light source enclosure. The enclosure is coupled to a substrate that includes a light emitter connected thereto. The enclosure has a geometry such that the enclosure has a first surface configured to couple substantially flat to the substrate and a second surface tilted with respect to the first surface and configured to couple substantially flat to a component of an electronic device through which the light is to project. The enclosure is optically transmissive and covers the light source when coupled to the substrate. In this way, the enclosure may be assembled and used in the electronic device by coupling the first surface to the substrate and coupling the second surface to the component.

    Abstract: First and second parts of an optical component may be spatially separated and not electrically connected. A passive side may contain an optical element. An active side may contain a light-emitting device. To detect damage to the optical element, passive side circuitry that is associated with the optical element may monitor a fail-safe resistor on the optical element for changes in resistance. The circuitry may use a passive side near-field communications antenna to transmit information such as information on the fail-safe resistor to active side circuitry that is associated with the light-emitting device using near-field communications. The active side circuitry can receive the transmitted information using an active side near-field communications antenna and can adjust the light-emitting device accordingly. The active side circuitry can also monitor the active side near-field communications antenna to detect when the passive side and active side antennas have been moved apart.

    Abstract: An electronic device includes a housing and a display. The housing defines an interior cavity and includes an optically-transmissive housing component. The display is disposed in the interior cavity and is viewable through the optically-transmissive housing component. An optoelectronic component is disposed in the interior cavity. An optical fiber extends between a first end positioned adjacent the optoelectronic component and a second end positioned adjacent the optically-transmissive housing component. The optical fiber defines a non-linear optical path between the first end and the second end. At least a portion of the optical fiber is laterally offset from a lateral edge of the display.

    Abstract: An earbud includes a housing, a speaker mounted within the housing, a processor mounted within the housing, a user input surface on the housing, and a set of self-mixing interferometry (SMI) sensors mounted within the housing. The set of SMI sensors includes a first SMI sensor configured to emit a first beam of light, and a second SMI sensor configured to emit a second beam of light. The second beam of light passes through the user input surface about an axis that is non-perpendicular to the user input surface. The processor is configured to adjust a parameter of the speaker at least partly in response to a first SMI output of the first SMI sensor and a second SMI output of the second SMI sensor.

    Abstract: A cap for an optical module includes features that aid in adhesive attachment. In some examples, the cap includes a standoff configured to initiate capillary action upon contacting adhesive on a substrate to move the cap toward the substrate and an alignment feature configured to control lateral movement of the cap with respect to the substrate as the capillary action moves the cap toward the substrate. In other examples, the cap includes a standoff configured to initiate movement of an adhesive away from a substrate via surface tension and wetting upon contacting the adhesive and an alignment feature is configured to control lateral movement of the cap with respect to the substrate as the adhesive moves away from the substrate.
