Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for data unit classification in accordance with one embodiment of the present description, in which in response to a data processing command, a storage controller classifies data units of a storage unit as either allocated to a data set or as unallocated to any data set. If allocated to a data set, the storage controller can further classify data set-allocated data units as either containing client data or metadata or as empty. In accordance with one aspect of the present description, the storage controller may bypass data processing of the data units which have not been allocated to any data set or otherwise do not contain client data or metadata. Other aspects of data unit classification in accordance with the present description are described.

The address spaces may include a first address space having an open manager. The open manager may be configured and arranged to manage activities associated with an open request in response to receiving the open request. The method and system may include performing pseudo-opens associated with the open request in the address spaces. The method and system may include performing a batch-open utilizing the pseudo-opens and a resource used to complete the open request.

Abstract: A computer system for defragmenting volumes in a mirrored system is provided. The computer system includes program instructions for suspending one or more updates from being mirrored from a first set of tracks on a first server to a second set of tracks on a second server. A defragmenting process is performed on the second server. The defragmentation process stores a before and after mapping of the second set of tracks, wherein the before and after mapping includes information identifying at least one track of the second set of tracks and a corresponding first location of the respective track before the defragmenting and a second location of the respective track after the defragmenting. The computer system further includes program instructions for, upon defragmenting, relocating at least one track of the first set of tracks on the first server according to the stored before and after mapping.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for assigning a cache structure to a catalog. The apparatus includes an identification module configured to identify a catalog for sharing in association with a coupling facility. The coupling facility includes a plurality of cache structures for catalogs of a cluster computing system. The coupling facility is configured to facilitate data sharing among a plurality of host systems of the cluster computing system. The apparatus includes a selection module configured to select a cache structure of the plurality of cache structures for the catalog based on one or more usage status indicators according to an assignment policy. The apparatus includes a storage module configured to store catalog information of the catalog in the cache structure in response to the selection module selecting the cache structure.

Abstract: A method for releasing storage space in asynchronously mirrored space-efficient secondary volumes is disclosed. In one embodiment, such a method includes reading a first copy of a free-space data structure stored on a space-efficient secondary volume. The free-space data structure tracks the usage status of storage elements in the space-efficient secondary volume. The method analyzes the first copy to determine which storage elements in the space-efficient secondary volume are not being used. Upon completion of a consistency group on the space-efficient secondary volume, the method reads a second copy of the free-space data structure and compares the first copy to the second copy to determine which storage elements had their usage status change during analysis of the first copy. The method releases storage elements in the space-efficient secondary volume that are not being used. A corresponding system and computer program product are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of and system for managing a data set of a storage facility is disclosed. The data set may be a sequential-access data set. The method and system may include structuring the sequential-access data set to have a first group-of-records configured for adding a second group-of-records to the sequential-access data set. The method and system add a second group-of-records to the sequential-access data set. The method and system merge the second group-of-records with the first group-of-records in response to a triggering event. The method and system establish, in response to merging the second group-of-records with the first group-of-records, a marker configured to indicate the first and second group-of-records, as merged, is sorted.

Abstract: A method for selecting and utilizing an access method for a VSAM data set includes monitoring a VSAM data set utilizing a first access method to access data therein. When performing such monitoring, specific indicators associated with the VSAM data set are observed. These indicators may include, for example, a number of input/output requests to the VSAM data set, a deferred request count against a control interval of the VSAM data set, a number of systems attempting to access the VSAM data set, and a number of reads/writes simultaneously occurring to the VSAM data set. The method analyzes these indicators to determine whether I/O performance of the VSAM data set would be enhanced by switching to a second access method. If the I/O performance would be enhanced, the method may be configured to automatically switch to the second access method. A corresponding system and computer program product are also disclosed.
