    Abstract: A method for releasing storage space in asynchronously mirrored space-efficient secondary volumes is disclosed. In one embodiment, such a method includes reading a first copy of a free-space data structure stored on a space-efficient secondary volume. The free-space data structure tracks the usage status of storage elements in the space-efficient secondary volume. The method analyzes the first copy to determine which storage elements in the space-efficient secondary volume are not being used. Upon completion of a consistency group on the space-efficient secondary volume, the method reads a second copy of the free-space data structure and compares the first copy to the second copy to determine which storage elements had their usage status change during analysis of the first copy. The method releases storage elements in the space-efficient secondary volume that are not being used. A corresponding system and computer program product are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method of and system for managing a data set of a storage facility is disclosed. The data set may be a sequential-access data set. The method and system may include structuring the sequential-access data set to have a first group-of-records configured for adding a second group-of-records to the sequential-access data set. The method and system add a second group-of-records to the sequential-access data set. The method and system merge the second group-of-records with the first group-of-records in response to a triggering event. The method and system establish, in response to merging the second group-of-records with the first group-of-records, a marker configured to indicate the first and second group-of-records, as merged, is sorted.

    Abstract: A method for selecting and utilizing an access method for a VSAM data set includes monitoring a VSAM data set utilizing a first access method to access data therein. When performing such monitoring, specific indicators associated with the VSAM data set are observed. These indicators may include, for example, a number of input/output requests to the VSAM data set, a deferred request count against a control interval of the VSAM data set, a number of systems attempting to access the VSAM data set, and a number of reads/writes simultaneously occurring to the VSAM data set. The method analyzes these indicators to determine whether I/O performance of the VSAM data set would be enhanced by switching to a second access method. If the I/O performance would be enhanced, the method may be configured to automatically switch to the second access method. A corresponding system and computer program product are also disclosed.
