Nitrated derivatives of aromatic compounds are obtained by contacting the latter, in the presence of methylene chloride as a reaction medium, with concentrated nitric acid in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid, and thereafter isolating the formed nitro derivatives.

A pharmaceutical composition is produced which is useful for treating allergic conditions in humans which comprises an anti-allergenic amount of a compound of the formula: ##SPC1##Or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof, wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and each is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aralkyl or halogen or any two of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 taken together, with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, form a phenyl, cyclohexyl or cyclohexenyl ring, in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

This invention relates to an improvement in a process for nitrating an aromatic or substituted aromatic compound e.g., toluene or ortho-xylene, by reacting such aromatic or substituted aromatic in the presence of nitric acid. The improvement for enhancing the rate of nitration as well as the selectivity of nitration at the para-position in this process comprises carrying out the nitration reaction in the presence of at least an effective amount of anhydrous calcium sulfate or soluble anhydrite.

There is provided a process for mononitrating ortho-xylene by reacting o-xylene with nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) or nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and an oxygen containing gas, such as oxygen, in the presence of a mercuric salt dissolved in acetic acid to obtain good yields of mononitrated o-xylene having an isomer distribution of at least a 70:30 ratio of 4- to 3- nitro-oxylenes. Such 4-nitro-o-xylene, upon separation from the isomeric mixture, finds utility in the preparation of xylidine derived preemergence herbicides.

A PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR NITRATION OF AN AROMATIC HYDROCARBON SUCH AS BENZENE OR TOLUENE IN WHICH THE HYDROCARBON IS VAPORIZED AND BUBBLED THROUGH AQUEOUS NITRIC ACID IN A REACTION VESSEL AT A TEMPERATURE WHICH MAY VARY FROM 50 TO 100*C. A MIXTURE OF NITRIC ACID AND NITRATED HYDROCARBON WHICH IS FORMED IS CONTINUOUSLY WITHDRAWN FROM THE REACTION VESSEL AND FED TO A SEPARATOR WHERE THE NITRATED HYDROCARBON IS SEPARATED AND WITHDRAWN AND THE NITRIC ACID IS RETURNED TO THE REACTION VESSEL.
