A fuel for gasoline engines contains a small amount of a copolymer of an olefin of from 2 to 40 carbon atoms and/or a cycloolefin of from 3 to 10 carbon atoms with maleic anhydride and/or a copolymer of an alkyl vinyl ether of from 1 to 30 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and/or a cycloalkyl vinyl ether of from 3 to 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl group with maleic anhydride and/or a copolymer of an alkyl vinyl ether of from 1 to 30 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and/or a cycloalkyl vinyl ether of from 3 to 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and an olefin of from 2 to 40 carbon atoms and/or a cycloolefin of from 3 to 10 carbon atoms with maleic anhydride having a total molecular weight of from 500 to 20,000 g per mole, the carboxyl groups on the copolymer having been wholly or partly converted with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal to form an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt and the remaining carboxyl groups having been converted with an alcohol and/or an amine of up to 50 carbon atom into the corresponding ester and/or amide groups and/or ammonium salts.

Polymers or copolymers containing an n-alkyl ester of a mono-ethylenically unsaturated C.sub.4 to C.sub.8 mono- or dicarboxylic acid wherein the average number of carbon atoms in the n-alkyl groups is from 12 to 14, and which contain no more than 10 wt. % of comonomer containing alkyl groups containing more than 14 carbon atoms and preferably no more than 20 wt. % of comonomer in which the alkyl group contains fewer than 12 carbon atoms are low temperature flow improvers for distillate fuels improving flow and filterability as well as lowering cloud point.

The new copolymers based on maleic anhydride and .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compounds contain, as bivalent structural units,A: 20 to 95 mole % of the structural element ##STR1## B: 0 to 40 mole % of the structural element ##STR2## C: and 0 to 40 mole % of the structural element ##STR3## the sum of the mole percents of (A), (B) and (C) being 100, and wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are identical or different and denote hydrogen, alkyl, optionally substituted aryl or the ester group ##STR4## in which R.sup.4 represents alkyl with 1 to 20 carbon atoms,R.sup.3 denotes an alkyl, cycloalkyl or optionally substituted aryl radical with 1 to 20 carbon atoms andX and Y are identical or different and represent the group--O--R.sup.5in whichR.sup.5 denotes hydrogen, a cation or alkyl with 1 to 40 carbon atoms, orX and Y represent the group--NHR.sup.3in which R.sup.3 has the abovementioned meaning,at least one of the radicals X and Y representing the group --O--R.sup.5, and at least one of the radicals in the radicals X and Y containing at least 18 carbon atoms.The new copolymers can be prepared by reacting alternating copolymers of maleic anhydride and .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compounds with monoalcohols and monoamines. Oil soluble ethylene polymers or copolymers having a M.sub.n less than about 4000 in combination with an oil soluble polyester material such as a homopolymer or copolymer comprising, at least 10% by weight C.sub.4 to C.sub.16 substantially straight-chain alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, are useful in improving the cold flow properties of distillate hydrocarbon oils.

An interpolymeric poly(n-alkylacrylate) of a molecular weight between about 3000 and 100,000 wherein said alkyl is of at least 18 carbons and at least 70 wt. % of said alkyl is of between 20 and 24 carbons inclusively, the C.sub.20 to C.sub.24 alkyl group consisting of between about 2 and 65 wt. % of C.sub.20 alkyl, between about 18 and 65 wt. % C.sub.22 alkyl, and between about 8 and 35 wt. % C.sub.24 alkyl; and a residual petroleum fuel containing between 4 and 15 wt. % macrocrystalline paraffin wax having incorporated therein a pour depressing amount of said poly (n-alkylacrylate) wherein said poly(n-alkylacrylate) is initially introduced in said residual fuel at a temperature above the solution point of said wax.

Liquid petroleum hydrocarbon compositions are provided which contain small amounts, sufficient to improve their fluidity characteristics, of an ester of an alkyl itaconate-maleic anhydride copolymer. A method for preparing these ester copolymers is also provided.
