Abstract: An electron discharge tube has its cathode carried by a supporting structure constituted by a closed hollow container which is in good heat exchanging relation with the cathode. In the container is a quantity of sodium, potassium, caesium, rubidium, lithium or an alloy of two or more of these metals having a boiling point equal to the desired cathode operating temperature. In operation the container acts as a boiler and condenser for the material.
