Abstract: A self-contained hermetically sealed foil changer for advancing a portion of foil web into a position normal to the path of a high energy particle beam. The path of the beam is defined generally by an aperture plate and cooperating axially movable barrel such that the barrel can be advanced toward the plate thereby positioning a portion of the foil across the beam path and sealing the foil between the barrel and the plate to form a membrane across said beam path. A spooling apparatus contained in the foil changer permits selectively advancing a fresh supply of foil across the beam path without breaking the foil changer seal.

Abstract: A composite/laminated window for electron-beam guns is comprised of a firstaterial of a polyester film, a second material of a low-Z metal selected from the low-Z metals consisting of aluminum, beryllium, and titanium in intimate contact with the polyester film, and a plurality of fluid cooled, spaced apart foil support members for supporting and cooling the composite window. The metal layer provides for heat transmission of the heat deposited in the metal layer and the polyester film by the electron beam. The polyester film which has 3 to 4 times the strength of the metal layer provides the strength and transmission required for a window operating in a vacuum on the electron gun side and a high pressure on the laser cavity side when the electron beam gun is employed as the source of electrons to produce ionization in the laser cavity.

Abstract: An ion therapy system for irradiating a patient with laser-accelerated ions may include a laser radiation source to emit laser radiation and a housing coupled to the laser radiation source. The system may have a laser target having a surface from which an ion beam can be generated. The housing may have a window portion to let an incident ion beam pass and to seal the housing.
