Abstract:
Block copolymers denoted by AB from acrylic or methacrylic acid, the corresponding blocks being denoted by A, and from alkyl acrylate or methacrylate with the alkyl chain being C.sub.1 -C.sub.10, the corresponding blocks being denoted by B. Said copolymer blocks are used as wetting and/or dispersing agents for solid particles in an essentially organic medium consisting of a solvent or a mixture of solvents solubilizing the block B. The invention also concerns solid particle dispersions using the above-defined block copolymers. It also concerns compositions, in particular cosmetic compositions, containing said dispersions.
Abstract:
The composition comprising a cellulose ester including at least 10 weight % of a low-substituted cellulose ester having an average degree of substitution not exceeding 2.15 and giving a 4-week decomposition rate of at least 60 weight % as determined using the amount of evolution of carbon dioxide as an indicator in accordance with ASTM 125209-91. The composition may contains a plasticizer, an aliphatic polyester, a photolysis accelerator such as anatase type titanium dioxide or a biodegradation accelerator such as organic acids and their esters. The low-substituted cellulose ester may be a cellulose ester having an average degree of polymerization from 50 to 250, an average degree of substitution from 1.0 to 2.15 and a residual alkali metal/alkaline earth metal-to-residual sulfuric acid equivalent ratio of 0.1 to 1.1. The biodegradable cellulose ester composition is suitable for the manufacture of various articles including fibrous articles such as tobacco filters.
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for making a liquid crystal composite in which droplets of a liquid crystal material are dispersed in a polymer matrix. At least one further material separates the liquid crystal material from the polymer matrix. This construction permits the polymer matrix to be selected on the basis of its environmental properties and the further material to be selected on the basis of its orientational interactions with liquid crystal material. Light valves made from such a composite exhibit improved electro-optical properties.
Abstract:
An improved wet powder, edible, film-forming composition for use in coating tablets and capsules consists essentially of powdered pigment particles, a film-forming, water soluble or water-dispersible, edible polymer and up to approximately 30% by weight of water. Such compositions are formed by blending the pigment particles and the polymer and applying the water onto the pigment-polymer blend in atomized form. Similar wet powder, edible, clear, film-forming compositions for use in coating tablets and capsules with a clear coating consist essentially of a film-forming, water soluble or water-dispersible, clear, edible polymer and up to approximately 30% by weight of water and are formed by applying the water onto the polymer in atomized form. The application of water in this manner preconditions the polymer and permits the preparation of smooth stable coating suspensions upon dilution with additional water and without the formation of fish eyes.
Abstract:
New sizing compositions containing: (a) a compound selected from the group consisting of alkenyl succinic anhydrides, alkyl ketene dimers and mixtures thereof and (b) a metal salt selected from the group of metals consisting of zirconium, hafnium, titanium and mixtures thereof are described. The use of the above sizing compositions during paper making provides paper products having superior liquid storage properties, especially liquid foods such as milk, juices, etc.
Abstract:
An improved bioactive agent delivery composition and method of application are described. The composition comprises a bioactive agent, a hydrophilic polymer in an incompletely hydrated state and a substantially water-miscible solvent system. The agent and polymer are essentially dissolved in the solvent system to form a sprayable composition having a viscosity of less than 350 cP. Upon dilution with water, the viscosity of the composition increases to in excess of 1000 cP to produce a retentive coating at the site of application which provides enhanced bioavailability of the agent.
Abstract:
Water soluble or water-dispersible cellulose acetoacetate esters are prepared by contacting a cellulose material with diketene, an alkyl acetoacetate, 2,2,6-trimethyl-4H-1,3-dioxin-4-one or a mixture thereof and a carboxylic anhydride in a solvent system comprising lithium chloride plus a carboxamide. Compositions containing the cellulose acetoacetate esters are useful for coatings applications.
Abstract:
Blends of cellulose esters and arylene-bis(diaryl phosphate) compounds are described. The blends are useful for preparing film or other molded objects. The blends can possess several desirable properties such as flame-retardation, plasticization, formulaic stabilization and dimensional stabilization.
Abstract:
