Abstract: Provided is a resin composite having high mechanical properties which make the resin composite moldable into and usable as members for use in applications such as vehicle-mounted members and electrical materials. The resin composite comprises 0.5-40 mass % chemically modified, fine cellulose fibers and a resin, wherein the chemically modified, fine cellulose fibers have a pyrolysis initiation temperature (TD) of 270° C. or higher, a number-average fiber diameter of 10 nm or larger but less than 1 μm, and a degree of crystallinity of 60% or higher. In a preferred embodiment, the chemically modified, fine cellulose fibers have a coefficient of variation (CV) in DS unevenness ratio, DSs/DSt, of 50% or less, the DS unevenness ratio being the ratio of the modification degree (DSs) of the surface layers of the fibers to the modification degree (DSt) of the whole of the fibers.

Abstract: The invention relates to systems and techniques for manufacturing articles containing cellulosic material, a coupling agent, and a binder resin, and related processes of making and using the cellulosic articles. In particularly exemplary embodiments, the manufactured articles are door skins, sometimes known as door facings, and doors made from the door skins. The article contains a lipophilic cellulosic material, a coupling agent, and a binder. The coupling agent is believed to increase the hydrophilicity (wetability) of the lipophilic cellulosic material.

Abstract: Regioselectively substituted cellulose esters having a plurality of pivaloyl substituents and a plurality of aryl-acyl substituents are disclosed along with methods for making the same. Such cellulose esters may be suitable for use in films, such as +A optical films, and/or +C optical films. Optical films prepared employing such cellulose esters have a variety of commercial applications, such as, for example, as compensation films in liquid crystal displays and/or waveplates in creating circular polarized light used in 3-D technology.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide regioselectively substituted carbohydrate and polysaccharide derivatives, such as cellulose esters, and methods for preparing them. Particular methods of the invention include deacylation of esters using tetrabutylammonium fluoride to obtain selective substitution at desired hydroxyl position(s) of the ester. Preferred is deacylation of an ester, which shows selectivity for removal of acyl groups from the ester of the secondary alcohols at C-2 and C-3, and which affords cellulose-6-O-esters with high regioselectivity by a simple one-step process employing no protective groups. Inventive regioselectively substituted cellulose esters can be prepared by such methods to obtain esters with the following anhydroglucose repeating units: wherein R1, R2, and R3 are each independently chosen from a hydrogen atom, and, whether substituted or unsubstituted, branched or unbranched, an alkanoyl group, an aroyl group, and a heteroaroyl group. In embodiments, the alkanoyl, aroyl and heteroaroyl groups can comprise from 1-20 carbon atoms.
