Abstract:
A method of supplementing a beverage or other edible aqueous medium with phytosterols, and the resulting phytosterol-supplemented edible media and other edible products, are described. The method includes admixing a dry powder of non-esterified phytosterol microparticles with triglyceride-based edible oil to produce a slurry of powder in oil. The slurry is optionally homogenized to disaggregate caked or otherwise aggregated phytosterol microparticles, allowing an increased proportion of the microparticles to be uniformly coated with the oil. The slurry is admixed and homogenized in the liquid aqueous phase of an edible aqueous medium with at least one exogenous emulsifier, surfactant or other agent that can stabilize the dispersion of oil-encapsulated phytosterol microparticles. The beverage or other edible aqueous medium may be pasteurized.
Abstract:
A nutritional fat or oil-based composition for increasing HDL cholesterol, decreasing LDL cholesterol and decreasing the LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio in human plasma is described. The composition typically includes at least 1% by weight myristic acid esterified at the sn-2 position in triglyceride molecules, includes between 10% and 40% by weight linoleic acid, and further includes between 30% and 65% by weight oleic acid and between 15% and 40% by weight total saturated fatty acids. The ratio of sn-2 myristic acid to sn-2 palmitic acid is typically greater than 1:1 and the sum of weight percentages for saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids equals 100%. In desirable cases, the composition is substantially cholesterol-free.
Abstract:
A nutritional supplement, prepared food product, or direct food additive for ingestion by mammals, and methods for preparing such products, are provided. Products of the invention comprise an oxidation-resistant fat-based composition substantially free of exogenous solubilizing and dispersing agents for phytosterols. The fat-based composition includes greater than 25% and less than 75% by weight of one or more triglyceride-based edible oil or fat, and greater than 25% and less than 75% by weight of one or more non-esterified phytosterols. The fat-based composition, when exposed to air, contains a reduced amount of oxidative by-products compared to a similar fat-based composition lacking non-esterified phytosterols. Also provided are methods for reducing plasma cholesterol in mammals, and methods for protecting plasma lipoproteins and cholesterol from oxidation by ingestion of products of the invention.
Abstract:
A composition with improved chemical stability and increased the efficacy as an alkylene carbonate-containing nail polish remover or general purpose solvent, such as a paint thinner or stripper is disclosed. The composition includes:(i) between 10% and 98% by weight of at least one alkylene carbonate solvent, (ii) between 1.5% and 25% by weight water, and (iii) an effective amount of a pH-buffering agent that maintains the pH of the composition between approximately pH 2 and pH 6.5 and that is chemically inert in the composition. The water in the composition functions to increase the rate at which the composition dissolves, e.g., nail lacquers, and the pH-buffering agent functions to stabilize the alkylene carbonate solvent against hydrolytic decomposition from pH-altering contaminants that may be introduced into the composition.

A dietary supplement is provided which includes at least one triglyceride-based edible fat and between 3% and 50% by weight of triglyceride recrystallized phytosterols. The dietary supplement can be in the form of a capsule, pill or wafer. Additionally, the dietary supplement can be combined with protein, vitamins, minerals, or combinations thereof.

A marker pen supporting and holding device includes a cavity for capturing a marker pen cap therein consisting of principal and auxiliary cavity portions. The principal cavity portion is provided for receiving a protective cap body and the auxiliary cavity portion is provided for guiding and captivating a marker cap pocket attachment clip. A securing pin extends through aligned device body apertures to traverse a gap between the cap body and the pocket attachment clip, thereby removably securing the cap within the device to enable one-handed marker pen handling.

A combustible fire-starting or heat-providing assembly is described that includes a suitable quantity of combustible alcohol-based fuel liquid held within a freestanding, combustible, alcohol-resistant and alcohol-impermeable container. The container is configured with at least a bottom wall and a perimeter sidewall that is continuous with the bottom wall, in which the upper portion of the container is substantially open to the air to allow free-burning of the fuel liquid. The container is of a suitable composition and the sidewall is of an adequate thickness and rigidity for the container to retain the fuel liquid without leakage throughout the period of combustion of the fuel, even as the sidewall gradually diminishes in height as it melts and burns downward toward the bottom wall of the container.

A prepared food product for ingestion by mammals is described and methods for preparing such products. The food product includes an oxidation-resistant fat-based composition substantially free of exogenous solubilizing and dispersing agents for phytosterols. The fat-based composition includes between 75% and 98% by weight of at least one triglyceride-based edible oil or fat, and between 2% and 25% by weight of non-esterified phytosterols. Typically, approximately 1.5% by weight of phytosterols remain soluble at room temperature, and between 0.5% and 23.5% by weight are converted to triglyceride-recrystallized phytosterols (TRPs). The fat-based composition which has been partially oxidized in the prepared food by exposure to air (and typically heat), contains a reduced amount of oxidative by-products compared to a similar fat-based composition lacking these non-esterified phytosterols.

A milk product including a level of vitamin E per serving of said product which can conveniently provide at least 100 IU of vitamin E per day to an individual ingesting the product. The vitamin E is uniformly microdispersed throughout the product, and ingestion of at least 100 IU of vitamin E per day in the product is sufficient to cause the fasting plasma vitamin E/cholesterol ratio in human subjects to be elevated at least 50% above the basal fasting level of vitamin E measured in the same subjects consuming no vitamin E dietary supplements. A method for elevating the plasma vitamin E level at least 50% in human subjects is also described. The method includes ingesting a milk product as described.

Stabilized peanut butter and other vegetable kernel butters, and vegetable kernel butter-containing food compositions such as peanut butter-containing food composition are described. The stabilized peanut butter or other vegetable kernel butter include a mixture of ground seed or nuts, and between approximately 0.25% and 4% by weight of microparticulate silicon dioxide (silicon dioxide measured as the anhydrous weight content of SiO.sub.2), and/or between approximately 0.25% and 5% by weight of propylene glycol. Also described is a method for preventing the spontaneous (natural) separation of oil and ground kernel solids in vegetable kernel butter or a vegetable kernel butter-containing food composition by combining between approximately 0.25% and 4% by weight of microparticulate silicon dioxide and/or between approximately 0.25% and 5% by weight of propylene glycol with the vegetable kernel butter.
