Abstract: An optical coherence tomography instrument suitable for imaging a retina is disclosed. In the instrument, an adjustable optical frequency shifter, which can be or include an acousto-optic modulator or electro-optic modulator, is arranged either (i) between a coupler and a reference optical system, (ii) in a reference optical system, (iii) between the coupler and a front-end optical system, or (iv) in a front-end optical system. The optical frequency of reference light or signal light may adjustably be increased or decreased. In operation, a subject is arranged such that its retina is in the focal depth of the front-end optical system. The increase or decrease in the optical frequency of the reference light or the sample light can be adjusted. Thereby, an interferogram representing a depth structure at the retina obtained between returning signal light and returning reference light may be brought to lie within a detection bandwidth of the instrument.

Abstract: An imaging system for generating an image of a region of an eye, comprising: an ocular imaging device controlled by a control module to acquire, from a first viewpoint, a first ocular image of the region having an image artefact caused by obstruction from imaging of a part of the region by an object, and a second ocular image from a predetermined second viewpoint, which shows at least a portion of the part of the region that was obstructed from imaging during acquisition of the first ocular image; and an image data processing module for combining the first and second ocular images to generate an enhanced ocular image having an image artefact caused by obstruction from imaging by the object which is smaller in relation to the image artefact in the first or second ocular image, or no such image artefact.

Abstract: A non-confocal point-scan Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography, OCT, imaging system, comprising: a scanning system arranged to perform a two-dimensional point scan of a light beam across an imaging target, and collect light scattered by the imaging target; a light detector arranged to generate a detection signal based on an interference between a reference light and the light collected by the scanning system. The OCT imaging system further comprises hardware arranged to: generate complex volumetric OCT data of the imaging target based on the detection signal, the OCT data including a component which, when the OCT data is processed to generate an enface projection of the OCT data, provides a defocusing and/or distortion in the enface projection; and generate corrected OCT data by executing a correction algorithm which uses phase information in the OCT data to remove at least some of the component from the OCT data.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method of processing repeat B-scans of an imaged region of a body part, the imaged region including an anatomical feature in a first subregion and vasculature of interest in a second subregion of the imaged region, to generate cropped B-scans for use in generating OCT angiography data which provides a representation of the vasculature of interest, the method comprising processing each B-scan of the repeat B-scans by: selecting a subset of the data elements of the B-scan such that the selected data elements are distributed along a representation of the anatomical feature in the B-scan; using the selected data elements to define a respective subregion of interest in the B-scan, which includes OCT data acquired from the second subregion containing the vasculature of interest; and cropping the B-scan to leave the subregion of interest in the B-scan.

Abstract: An ophthalmic device for imaging an eye, wherein a scanning element scans a first portion of light beam across a region of an eye via a light guiding component and a second portion of the light beam is reflected back by the light guiding component. The ophthalmic device further comprises: a light detector to detect light reflected from eye and guided to the light detector by the light guiding component; and a dynamic amplitude mask which receives the light reflected from the eye and the light reflected back by the light guiding component, and has an unmasked portion to allow light reflected from the eye to reach the light detector, and a masked portion whose spatial distribution varies with a scan angle such that the masked portion prevents light reflected back by the light guiding component from reaching the light detector during the scan.

Abstract: An optical system comprising: an optical element having an optical property responsive to an applied signal, a variation of the optical property with the signal exhibiting hysteresis in a first range of values and no hysteresis in a second range of values of the signal; a memory storing data representing a hysteresis curve which indicates the variation of the optical property with increasing and decreasing values of the signal; and a controller which continuously controls the optical property by: generating, based on the stored data, a cyclic signal having a discontinuity in each cycle of the cyclic signal, and setting the discontinuity size in each cycle based on the stored data such that a part of the variation of the optical property with the cyclic signal coincides with a part of the variation represented by the stored data; and applying the cyclic signal to the optical element.
