Abstract: The subject matter of this specification can be embodied in, among other things, a mixing system that includes a heating assembly configured to heat liquid, and a mixing assembly including a tank defining a cavity and configured to retain liquid, an inlet in fluidic communication with the cavity and configured to receive liquid from the heating assembly, a mixing impeller assembly configured to mix contents of the cavity, an actuator configured to actuate the mixing impeller assembly to mix contents of the cavity, and an outlet in fluidic communication with the cavity and having a valve configured to selectively prevent and permit egress of contents of the cavity.

Abstract: A method for predicting a likelihood of infection in a set of similarly sourced plant products is disclosed. A subset of plant products is selected from the set of plant products. For each plant product in the subset, a level of expression of one or more infection biomarkers, and optionally a level of expression of one more housekeeping biomarkers, are determined. A set of biomarker expression statistics for the subset of plant products is determined based on the determined levels of expression of the one or more infection biomarkers and optionally the levels of expression of the one or more housekeeping biomarkers for each plant product in the subset. A likelihood of infection in the set of plant products is then predicted based at least in part on the determined set of biomarker expression statistics for the subset of plant products.

Abstract: This disclosure is directed to systems and methods for assessing quality characteristics of food items based on analyzing volatiles outgassed by them. The quality characteristics can include presence of infection, ripeness stage, flavor, taste, and smell. Determining quality characteristics can be advantageous to make supply chain modifications that optimize on quality and reduce food-based waste. A tube having a sorbent material can be placed in an environment containing the food items. Volatiles outgassed by the food items can collect on the sorbent material. A computing system can receive the volatiles presence and concentration data and can apply a machine learning model to the data to determine quality characteristics of the food items. The model can be trained using human observations of quality characteristics, historic supply chain information, and processed volatiles data associated with other food items, wherein the other food items are a same type as the food items.

Abstract: Described herein are packaging (e.g., containers) and methods for storing perishable items. The containers can include a plurality of openings that cause a reduction in the in-package relative humidity. The perishable items can be coated with a protective coating to prevent moisture loss from produce during storage. The perishable items can be coated prior to storage in the packaging or after being placed in the packaging. The container and coatings therefore allow the perishable items to be stored at lower relative humidity (e.g., lower than industry standards for shipment and storage, or lower than about 90% relative humidity), which can help delay the growth of biotic stressors such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, and/or pests.

Abstract: Compositions for forming protective coatings can include a first group of compounds, where each compound of the first group is a fatty acid, fatty acid ester, or fatty acid salt having a carbon chain length of at least 14 carbons. The compositions can optionally include a second group of compounds selected from fatty acids, fatty acid esters, fatty acid salts, and combinations thereof, wherein each compound of the second group has a carbon chain length from 7 to 13 carbons. At least some of the compounds of the first group can function as emulsifiers, allowing the composition to be dissolved, suspended, or dispersed in a solvent. At least some of the compounds of the second group can function as wetting agents in order to improve the surface wetting of items to be coated when solutions, suspensions, or colloids that include the compositions are applied to the items.
