Abstract:
A process for enantioselectively epoxidising a prochiral olefin, which process comprises reacting a prochiral olefin with a source of oxygen in the presence of a salen catalyst and a source of an electron donating ligand, characterized in that the donor ligand is isoquinoline N-oxide or a compound having donor ligand activity and having substantially the same solubility characteristics as isoquinoline N-oxide.
Abstract:
An introduction apparatus for approximating a longitudinal member and an implant to permit fixation therebetween. The introduction apparatus having a gripping nose for securely engaging an implant, a lateral approximation mechanism for laterally aligning an implant and an offset longitudinal member, and a reduction mechanism for reducing the vertical distance between the implant and the longitudinal member. The introduction apparatus is provide with a gripping nose actuated by axial movement of a clamping shaft in an outer sleeve. The clamping shaft further includes an axial cannula for passage of a fastener to the implant.
Abstract:
A method of treating a wound site wherein a porous, adhesive backed dressing is utilized. A vacuum and/or heat is applied to the wound site through the dressing so as to draw the tissue adjacent the wound site to the dressing so as to minimize trauma to the wound and increase the adherence of the adhesive.
Abstract:
A highly accurate yet inexpensive bench saw fence which includes (i) a conduit with a featureless distal end for guiding a workpiece along a bench saw table, (ii) a clamping mechanism proximate the distal end of the conduit for clamping the fence to a bench saw table which includes a linear alignment ridge for guiding the bench saw table into proper contact with the clamping mechanism and ensuring proper alignment of the fence with respect to the bench saw table, and (iii) a rotatable control lever proximate the proximal end of the conduit in mechanical communication with the clamping mechanism for controlling movement of the clamping mechanism between a release position and a clamping position and by movement of the lever from a primary locking position to a secondary locking position, (iv) wherein rotation of the control lever causes concentric rotation of the path between the primary and secondary locking positions.
Abstract:
A continuous process for reclaiming rubber, steel and fiber products from tires wherein the tires and tire material flow on conveyors throughout the various steps of the process, including the steps of shredding a flow of whole tires into pieces in a shear-type shredder, and screening the flow of tire pieces by size into a first flow containing pieces at least as large as a specified size, and a second flow containing pieces under a specified size. Reshredding and rescreening the pieces of the first flow is performed until they are smaller than the specified size. Granulating the pieces of the second flow occurs in a first granulator wherein the pieces remain in the granulator until they are reduced below a second specified size. Fiber materials are vacuumed from the flow of granulated material with an air separator after granulation and steel and steel-containing rubber pieces are removed from the flow of material via a magnetic separator after the fiber materials have been removed.
Abstract:
A scroll saw is disclosed having upper and lower reciprocable arms terminating in upper and lower ends having a saw blade connected therebetween. A releasable blade tensioning device is mounted on the upper end including a blade support member having a central portion pivotally mounted to the upper end with a first end thereof extending along the upper arm and a second end connectable to the saw blade. The blade support member is pivotable between a first blade tensioning position and a second blade tension releasing position, and a manually rotatable cam is mounted on the first end and a manually operable adjustment screw engageable therewith is mounted on the upper arm. The manually rotatable cam is constructed and arranged to force the first end and the upper arm apart in one rotated position thereof to move the blade support member to the first position, and to permit the blade support member to move to the second position in another rotated position thereof. The manually operable adjustable screw permits adjustment of the tension on the saw blade.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 4-(6.sup.1 -methoxy-2.sup.1 -naphthyl)butan-2-one and to certain compounds for use in that process.British patent specification No. 1,474,377 discloses inter alia that 4-(6.sup.1 -methoxy-2.sup.1 -naphthyl)butan-2-one possesses useful anti-inflammatory activity. A particularly favored process has now been discovered that can be used to produce 4-(6.sup.1 -methoxy-2.sup.1 -naphthyl)butan-2-one in particularly good yield. The present invention provides a process for the preparation of 4-(6.sup.1 -methoxy-2.sup.1 -naphthyl)butan-2-one which process comprises the hydrogenation of a compound of the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein Ar is a 6-methoxy-2-naphthyl group; X and Y are each hydrogen atoms or together represent a second bond between the carbon atoms to which they are attached; and R is a group such that --CO.sub.2 R represents an ester group convertible by hydrogenation to a CO.sub.2 H group.
Abstract:
A glazing panel roofing system includes a glazing panel and glazing panel brackets configured to clamp upon one of the side edge surfaces of the glazing panel. The glazing panel includes two flat face surfaces and two side edge surfaces. The glazing panel brackets are configured to clamp upon one of the side edge surfaces of the glazing panel. Each glazing panel bracket includes a base clamping feature including a base gripping feature surface configured to abut a first surface of the flat face surfaces, a top clamping feature including a top gripping feature surface configured to abut a second surface of the flat face surfaces, and a threaded fastener securing the top clamping feature to the base clamping feature, wherein torque applied to the threaded fastener changes a clamping force applied between the top clamping feature and the base clamping feature upon the glazing panel.
Abstract:
A hydraulic damping apparatus comprising a conduit for a hydraulic fluid having a port in a wall of the conduit; a resonator having a chamber and a neck, the neck being arranged to provide fluid communication between the chamber and the port. The apparatus further comprises a first pressure sensor arranged to sense pressure in the conduit upstream of the port, a second pressure sensor arranged to sense pressure in the conduit downstream of the port, and a controller configured to determine the amplitude of a pressure fluctuation sensed by the first pressure sensor and the amplitude of a pressure fluctuation sensed by the second pressure sensor. The controller is further configured to vary a resonant frequency of the resonator in accordance with a difference between the amplitude of the pressure fluctuation sensed by the first pressure sensor and the amplitude of the pressure fluctuation sensed by the second pressure sensor.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to an apparatus, method, and system for playing a sports card game that features graphical, diagrammatic solutions for play outcomes. The preferred embodiment is directed to a representation of an American football game and consists of a deck of cards, half of which are offense cards, and half of which are defense cards. Offensive cards feature a play line while each defensive card features multiple possible play paths and a corresponding number of possible play outcomes. The method for playing the game involves the players picking cards and then flipping over their cards and aligning their edges at which point the play line on the offense card will line up with one of the possible play paths and outcomes on the defense card. An electronic version of the present invention is also disclosed.
