Abstract:
In a booster type high-pressure container including an outer cylinder associated with upper and lower lids and an inner cylinder fitted in the outer cylinder with a gap clearance retained therebetween, a booster chamber is provided between a piston disposed within the inner cylinder at its bottom portion and the lower lid of the outer cylinder, a boosting liquid medium is injected into the booster chamber for pushing up the inner cylinder jointly with the piston to boost the pressure within the inner cylinder, and the gap clearance communicates with the booster chamber.
Abstract:
In a high pressure tubular reactor containing a plurality of tubular sections interconnected in series by means of connection devices, which reactor contains one or more reaction zones, there is positioned within each reaction zone a single rupture disc device from about 24 to about 40 feet downstream from the reaction zone inlet. A particularly suitable rupture disc-connection block device is disclosed.

Abstract:
Geothermal energy is used to provide the temperatures and pressure necessary for catalytic conversion of carbon monoxide and hydrogen to methanol by lowering the reaction chamber into a geothermal well or by otherwise using geothermal fluids to supply heat and pressure to the reaction chamber.
Abstract:
A tube-type reactor includes a reactor shell surrounding a bundle of vertically-arranged jacketed tube assemblies. An equilateral triangle is formed by lines interconnecting the central axes of the three jacketed tube assemblies in mutual contact. Each jacketed tube assembly includes a reactor tube forming an annular space within a sheathing tube which includes six longitudinally-arranged slots uniformly distributed about its top end and into which connecting elements are received and welded to join together the sheathing tubes. In one form, the connector element includes spacer heads extending along a web to lie within the annular gap between the reactor tube and the sheathing tube and abut against the reactor tube. In a second embodiment, the connector element includes a web having three spider arms with longitudinal recesses, the width of which corresponds to the wall thickness of a sheathing tube.
Abstract:
A process and apparatus for the continuous polymerization of ethene at high pressures and temperatures, in the presence of an initiator. Reaction is carried out in a cylindrical autoclave wherein ethene is fed into the autoclave at a high velocity through nozzles having a restricted opening. The nozzles are fitted and mounted on the autoclave in at least two different places at an angle which is acute to the central axis of the autoclave whereby the direction of flow of the ethene coming from the nozzles is substantially parallel and opposite.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for the melt synthesis of intermetallic compounds from metal components, at least one of which is highly volatile. The metal components are placed in a reaction vessel which is sealed by a liquid sealant in combination with a mechanical seal prior to heating the reactants to a temperature at which one or more of the reactants develops an appreciable vapor pressure. The atmosphere surrounding the reaction vessel is pressurized to a pressure above the maximum vapor pressure developed by the reactants during the melt synthesis which is accomplished by heating the reactants. The combination of mechanical and liquid seal is of a character to permit diffusion by high-pressure gas through it.

1,218,823. Tubular pressure vessel. SOC. NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE. 2 Feb., 1968 [16 Feb., 1967; 16 Nov., 1967], No. 5485/68. Heading B1X. [Also in Division F2. A tubular vessel, in which a reaction medium can flow under high pressure and at controlled temperature, comprises a series of cylindrical tubes 1, 14, each having dimensions such that the ratio of the outside to the inside diameters, is in excess of 1.4:1 at least one tube being surrounded by a jacket member 5, the tubes being firmly interconnected by couplings providing fluid-tight joints and the ends 2, 14 of the tubes being reinforced by the provision of increased thickness of metal. The temperature of the reaction is controlled by means of heat exchange with a fluid introduced into the jacket 5 the wall of tube, over the main portion of its run, being thick enough to withstand the high pressure and yet thin enough to provide good heat exchange properties. The joint between the jacket and end 2 of a tube 1 comprises the intermediate members 6, 7 screwed onto the thickened portion 5 of the tube and a flange 8 which is bolted to a flange on the jacket 5, seals 10 being interposed between the intermediate member 6 and the tube 1 and between the intermediate member 6 and the jacket 5. The tube 1 is connected to an adjacent tube 14 by means of flanges 11, 15 which are screwed onto the adjacent ends of the tubes 1, 14 and are connected together by bolts 12. The tube 14 may be a single bend or multibend elbow to form a reaction vessel in the form of a coil, the vessel being particularly useful for the polymerization of ethylene.
