The presence of the propylene-based elastomer can provide foamed profiles with reduced density while maintaining properties including compression set and compression load deflection at a level comparable to those of conventional EPDM foams.

A method for manufacturing a thermoformed a polyetherimide/poly(biphenyl ether sulfone) foam article which comprises following three steps: Step 1. preparing a polyetherimide (PEI)/poly(biphenyl ether sulfone) (P2) foamable composition [composition (FP)], wherein said composition (FP) comprises PEI in an amount ranging from 0.1% weight (% wt.) to 99.9% wt., based on the total weight of the PEI and the poly(biphenyl ether sulfone) (P2), Step 2. foaming the composition (FP) to yield a foamed (PEI)/poly(biphenyl ether sulfone) material [foam (P) material], and Step 3. molding said foam (P) material under the effect of heat and pressure to provide a thermoformed foamed article.

PLA polymers that can be expanded into microporous articles having a node and fibril microstructure are provided. The fibrils contain PLA polymer chains oriented with the fibril axis. Additionally, the PLA polymers have an inherent viscosity greater than about 3.8 dL/g and a calculated molecular weight greater than about 150,000 g/mol. The PLA polymer article may be formed by bulk polymerization where the PLA bulk polymer is made into a preform that is subsequently expanded at temperatures above the glass transition temperature and below the melting point of the PLA polymer. In an alternate embodiment, a PLA polymer powder is lubricated, the lubricated polymer is subjected to pressure and compression to form a preform, and the preform is expanded to form a microporous article. Both the preform and the microporous article are formed at temperatures above the glass transition temperature and below the melting point of the PLA polymer.

The present invention relates to composition for the preparation of a polymeric foam with improved thermal properties, to a polymeric foam obtainable therefrom, and to a method for preparing such a polymeric foam each for them comprising (i) an at least essentially amorphous polymer resin and (ii) a nucleating agent. The at least essentially amorphous polymer resin is preferably polystyrene. The nucleating agent is preferably selected from the group consisting of 1,3:2,4-bis-(benzylidene)-sorbitol derivates and mixtures thereof, and is preferably 1,3:2,4-bis-O-(4-methylbenzylidene)-D-sorbitol, 1,3:2,4-bis-(3,4-Dimethylbenzylidene)-sorbitol and 1,3:2,4-bis-(4-propylbenzylidene)-propyl sorbitol.
