Abstract:
Acidic aqueous coating compositions containing an organic coating-forming material form coatings on metallic surfaces which are immersed therein. The thickness or weight of the coating formed by the coating composition is a function of the time the metallic surface is immersed in the composition. The resulting coatings have adhesion properties thereby providing an adherent base to which other coatings, for example, paint primers and/or final finish paints can be applied.
Abstract:
Compositions containing lamellar micelles and which exhibit retro-viscous property at noncryogenic temperatures are prepared by mixing 4-15 percent of a surfactant (preferably an alkaryl sulfonate having an average equivalent weight of 350-525), 30-70 percent of a liquid hydrocarbon, 15-66 percent of water and optionally up to 20 percent of a cosurfactant, preferably an alcohol containing 1-20 carbon atoms, and/or electrolyte (preferably inorganic salt). The micelles have an axial ratio of at least 3.5 and preferably the composition has a viscosity of at least 75 cp. at a shear rate of 10 sec.sup.- .sup.1 at 23.degree.C. The composition is substantially optically clear, phase stable, birefringent, and the flow properties are such that substantially large increases in flow rate, e.g. 20-fold, can be realized at very small increases in pressure drop, e.g. 5 percent. Uses for the compositions include stimulation of wells (e.g. fracturing fluids), drilling fluids, carrier fluids in pipelines, fluidics, cutting oils, and similar applications.
Abstract:
A composite material is described which will provide low friction surfaces for materials in rolling or sliding contact and is self-lubricating and oxidation resistant up to and in excess of about 930.degree.C. The composite is comprised of a metal component which lends strength and elasticity to the structure, a fluoride salt component which provides lubrication and, lastly, a glass component which not only provides oxidation protection to the metal but may also enhance the lubrication qualities of the composite.
Abstract:
A tire and wheel assembly having a lubricant to enable it to be operated in a deflated condition without destructive heating in which one or more ingredients of the lubricant composition are enclosed in an enclosing means, the other ingredient or ingredients of the composition being placed in the inflation chamber of the assembly. The enclosing means release the first ingredient or ingredients into the inflation chamber, upon loss of inflation pressure, to form the composition.
Abstract:
An aqueous fluid for the working of metals comprising an aqueous solution of at least one salt of an amido acid of the formula: ##EQU1## in which R is a hydrocarbon group, substituted or not by chlorine, and having between 9 and 25 carbon atoms; n and n' are whole numbers or zero, identical or not, whose sum (n + n') is equal to 1 or 2.

WHERE R1 and R2 are hydrogen or methyl; R3 and R4 are each an independently selected alkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms; R5 is the organic residue exclusive of reactive hydroxyl groups of a polyol, p is an integer of from 2 to 6 inclusive and n and m are positive integers independently selected in each chain and whose sum in each chain is from 2 to 20 are prepared by successively reacting boric acid with a glycol monoether and a polyol. These esters are useful as stabilizers and corrosion inhibitors for lubricants and non-aqueous hydraulic fluids.
Abstract:
The addition of a small amount of a soluble salt of perhalometallic or perhalometalloidic acid to an energytransmitting functional fluid sharply enhances the anti-erosion properties of the fluid.
Abstract:
This invention is based on a finding in which an addition of 10 - 30 wt percent of alloy powders to the solid lubricant of graphite-sodium fluoride or graphite-sodium fluoride-tungusten disulfide suitable for use at high temperature contributes to improvements of the mechanical strength as well as the friction coefficient, the preferable alloy being that of the composition of 77Cu-23Pb or 90Cu-5Sn-5Pb. While the addition of 10 - 30 wt percent of a metal salt of tungustate contributes to the formation of strong film or coatings at a high temperature and to prolongation of bearing life.
