Abstract: A coated PC steel stranded cable includes: a stranded cable in which a plurality of elemental wires each composed of steel are twisted together; an anti-corrosive coating having an outer circumferential portion that coats an outer circumference of the stranded cable; an outer coating that coats an outer circumference of the anti-corrosive coating; and an optical fiber provided at a position inwardly of an outer circumferential surface of the outer coating and corresponding to a strand groove in the stranded cable so as to follow expansion and contraction of the stranded cable.

Abstract: A composite reinforcer that can adhere directly to a diene rubber matrix is usable as a reinforcing element for a pneumatic tire. The composite reinforcer includes at least one reinforcing thread, such as a carbon steel cord. Covering each thread individually or several threads collectively is a layer of a thermoplastic polymer composition. The thermoplastic polymer composition includes at least one thermoplastic polymer have a glass transition temperature that is positive, a poly(p-phenylene ether) (PPE), and a functionalized unsaturated thermoplastic styrene (TPS) elastomer having a glass transition temperature that is negative. The TPS elastomer includes a functional group selected from: an epoxide group, a carboxyl group, an acid anhydride group, and an ester group. A process for manufacturing such a composite reinforcer is presented, as well as a process for producing a rubber article, especially a pneumatic tire, incorporating such a composite reinforcer.

Abstract: A method of wear detection of a coated belt or rope includes connecting a wear detection unit to one or more monitoring strands and/or cords of a coated belt or rope. The coated belt or rope includes one or more baseline strands and/or cords exhibiting a first change in electrical resistance as a function of bending cycles of the belt or rope and one or more monitoring strands and/or cords exhibiting a second change in electrical resistance as a function of bending cycles of the belt or rope, greater than the first change in electrical resistance. An electrical resistance of the one or more monitoring strands and/or cords is measured via the wear detection unit. Using at least the measured electrical resistance of the one or more monitoring strands and/or cords, a wear condition of the belt or rope is determined.

The cord may include a plurality of filaments. The filaments are free of second-order helical structure. In a first embodiment, the filaments includes at least one inner filament and a plurality of outer filaments surrounding the at least one inner filament. The outer filaments are bunched together by forming a first-order helical structure through the length of the cord. In a second general embodiment, the filaments are free of both first- and second-order helical structures. The filaments are bunched together by a restraining loop or adhesive at one or more locations along the length of the cord. Methods of making the tension cord are also disclosed.
