Abstract:
The teachings herein disclose methods and apparatus that simplify impairment correlation estimation for received signal processing, based on determining, for any given processing interval, which impairment contributors should be considered in the estimation of overall received signal impairment correlations. These simplifications reduce computational processing requirements, allowing reduced circuit complexity and/or reduced operating power, and improve receiver performance. A corresponding transmitter and transmission method include transmitting multiple information streams to targeted receivers according to ongoing scheduling, and controlling the ongoing scheduling to reduce the number of impairment contributors considered in impairment correlation estimation at the targeted receivers. In one embodiment, a receiver identifies which impairment contributors to consider based on receiving control information. In another embodiment, the receiver identifies the impairment contributors to consider based on background processing, e.g., background determination of parametric model fitting parameters for a plurality of impairment contributors, and observing those model fitting parameters over time.
Abstract:
Embodiments are described to mitigate network interference issues and to enable a significant increase in the throughput of wireless systems. In one method, pilot transmissions of a first and second group of wireless units are synchronized. Each wireless unit of the first group and each wireless unit of the second group use a different orthogonal pilot (than others in their group) from the same group of orthogonal pilots. Also, the pilot transmissions of the second group of wireless units are synchronized so as to be shifted in time from the pilot transmissions of the first group. In another method, data from neighboring cells and pilots from wireless units are received at a cell. Channel vectors for the wireless units are then estimated using the received data from neighboring cells, the received pilots from the wireless units and previously estimated channel vectors between the cell and the neighboring cells.
Abstract:
A method for synchronizing a CDMA receiver to a transmitter when an adaptive antenna is utilized to receive transmitted data, wherein a receiving antenna system is adapted between a 360° reception angle pattern (i.e., an omni-directional pattern) and a fixed reception angle (i.e., a directional pattern) by permitting the receiver to identify a pilot signal having the largest magnitude. The receiver minimizes interference from other pilot signals by steering antenna pattern nulls toward other transmitters. As a result, the time required for the receiver to acquire a valid pilot signal is significantly reduced.
Abstract:
Rake receivers in code division multiple access (CDMA) telecommunication comprise fingers (1,2,3) with each finger processing signal components for a particular transmission path to be able to better synchronize with a RF signal received via different paths, and a combiner (4) for combining the results originating from said fingers, and a compensator in the form of a controlled oscillator in a feedback loop. By locating a finger compensator (20-25) in a finger, said finger can handle complex situations, like Doppler shifts under high-speed conditions. Preferably, most or all fingers each comprise such a finger compensator, in which case said feedback loop can be avoided. Such a finger compensator can be hardware, software or a mixture of both when comprising a filter (21) plus an amplitude normalizer (22) between two arithmetical modules (20,25) for multiplying an input symbol signal with a conjugated previous input symbol signal and an output symbol signal with a previous output symbol signal.

A mixer generates channel impulse response estimates. A channel despreader despreads the filtered signal using the pseudo-noise signal generated to produce a despread channel signal of the selected channel. A pilot channel despreader despreads the filtered signal using a pseudo-noise signal generator to produce a despread pilot signal of the pilot channel. A hard decision processor determines a symbol value of the despread channel signal. A complex conjugate processor generates a complex conjugate of the symbol value as a correction signal. A phase-locked loop produces a phase correction signal to recover carrier offset.

Consequently, arrival direction estimation accuracy can be ensured without increasing throughput even if the power every path is low by estimating an average arrival direction of an entire set of multiple paths having the angular spread from a result of one angular spectrum by multiple correlation operation units that perform mutual correlation operations with pilot signals for baseband signals received by the array antenna, a path detection unit that detects multiple arrival path receiving timings by generating a delay profile based on output of each of the correlation operation units, a path correlation value synthesis unit that synthesizes a correlation operation value calculated in the multiple correlation operation units and an arrival direction estimation unit that collectively estimates multiple path arrival directions using output of the path correlation value synthesis unit.

A channel estimation value of data symbols of a data channel is calculated by weighting and averaging pilot symbols in a parallel time multiplexing method. Also, a channel estimation value of data symbols during each data symbol interval is calculated by dividing data symbols in a slot into a plurality of data symbol intervals, selecting pilot symbols suitable for calculation of a channel estimation value of data symbols during each data symbol interval and weighting and averaging that pilot symbols. Also, a fading frequency is detected based on an inner product value of pilot symbols. Weighting factors are changed based on the detected fading frequency. Also, a channel estimation value is calculated by weighting and averaging pilot signals using a plurality of weighting sequences. The calculated channel estimation value is used to demodulate received data.

A buffering apparatus to process digital communication signals includes a plurality of buffers, a processing unit, and programmed memory. The programmed memory has instructions directing the processing unit to process the digital samples corresponding to a group of symbols to be processed in a plurality of buffers. The digital samples start in a first buffer of the plurality of buffers and end in a second buffer of the plurality of buffers. The digital samples are received at a third buffer of the plurality of buffers during the processing of the digital samples.
