Abstract: Components are extracted from user data being read from a reader of a hard disk drive. The components collectively indicate both a magnitude and direction of a read offset of the reader over a track. The components are input to a machine-learning processor during operation of the hard disk drive, causing the machine-learning processor to produce an output. A read offset of the reader is estimated during the operation of the hard drive head based on the output of the machine learning processor. While reading the user data, a radial position of the reader over the track is adjusted via an actuator based on the estimated read offset.

Abstract: A heat-assisted magnetic recording head includes a near-field transducer, a heat sink, a diffuser, and a diffusion barrier. The near-field transducer is configured to produce a hot spot on a proximate magnetic disk. The heat sink is configured to draw heat away from the near-field transducer. The heat sink is disposed in a down-track direction relative to and coupled to the near-field transducer. The diffuser is configured to draw heat away from the heat sink. The diffuser is disposed in a down-track direction relative to the heat sink. The diffusion barrier includes a metal. The diffusion barrier is disposed between and coupled to the heat sink and the diffuser.

Abstract: A method includes managing, by a computer processing unit (CPU) in a first enclosure, a computing task. The method further includes determining, by a controller, that the computing task requires an additional resource. The controller selects an available resource from a pool of available resources in the first enclosure and in a second enclosure by comparing weighted paths between the first CPU and the available resources. Data is transferred between the CPU and the selected available resource to assist with the computing task.

Abstract: A heat-assisted magnetic recording device is disposed in a hermetically sealed enclosure. The device includes a slider comprising a reader, a writer, and an optical waveguide configured to couple light from a light source to a near-field transducer situated at or near an air bearing surface of the slider. The near-field transducer comprises an enlarged portion and a peg extending from the enlarged portion in a direction of the air bearing surface. A fill gas is provided within the enclosure. The fill gas comprises a mixture of a low-density, inert gas and at least one gas that oxidizes carbon, where the total carbon oxidizing gas concentration of the fill gas is 3-50% by volume. In certain embodiments, the fill gas comprises a hydrogen concentration sufficient to retard oxidation of the peg when the peg is at an operating temperature associated with write operations.

Abstract: Polynomial function secret sharing provides for computation of reconstruction share results for a polynomial function on an input. An allocatable share of the polynomial function is received at a computing system of the share result computation systems. The allocatable share is generated from the polynomial function. Each of the allocatable shares is distributed to a unique share result computation system of the share result computation systems. Each allocatable share includes a share element for each coefficient in the polynomial function, wherein the share elements for a coefficient across the share result computation systems summing to the coefficient. A reconstruction share result is generated at the computing system by computing a dot product of the input and the allocatable share received by the computing system. A combination of the reconstruction share results generated by the share result computation systems yields a reconstructed result of the polynomial function on the input.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for a decision tree processing system. A machine learning decision tree architecture, such as a Random Forest, can be very intense in computation and can require a large amount of memory. To account for such, the systems and methods herein can implement a hardware approach where the training for the decision trees can be performed in advance via firmware (or an algorithm implemented via any other software and processing system) and the hardware can implement a circuit to process the decision trees. In some examples, multiple decision trees may be processed in parallel. Also, a circuit can compute the best outcome for a decision tree based on a random feature and a pre-determined threshold for the random feature assigned to each node of the decision tree.
