Abstract:
The invention relates to a system for the discharge and/or distribution of a gas from a source of the gas, and more specifically relates to such a system which enables gas from a source to be discharged and/or distributed to at least two gas-utilizing units irrespective of the operational status of each unit. The gas from the source is conducted from a manifold to each unit via respective conduits. Each conduit has a valve having a maximum closed position, in which the valve is open to a predetermined minimum degree exceeding zero, and a maximum opened position, in which it is open to a predetermined extent set by the maximum gas capacity of the respective unit. One valve maintains a gas flow delivery pressure to its respective unit not exceeding a selected maximum pressure. The other valve maintains a gas flow-rate corresponding to the gas-requirement of its respective unit. Means are provided for on-stream diversion and discharge of gas passing to each unit to permit emergency independent shutdown of each unit. Accordingly, discharge of gas from the source can always take place irrespective of the operational status of the units to which the gas is distributed and without causing excessively high back-pressures at the source when the units are inoperative. In a specific embodiment, the source is the regenerator of a catalytic cracker, one unit is a CO-boiler and the other unit is a CO-furnace.
Abstract:
An oscillating or timing valve, sometimes known as an air relay, suitable for use with a chemical injector. A valve housing with sliding poppet, sliding piston and adjustable needle, with the poppet movable in one direction to close an exhaust port and with the piston movable in the opposite direction to engage the poppet and close the outlet or drive port and open the exhaust port. The piston oscillates between the drive port open and the drive port closed conditions, with the timing adjusted by varying the needle orifice and the size of the chamber fed through the needle orifice. The oscillating valve does not utilize any diaphragms or springs.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a process for the free radical polymerization of at least one monomer into a polymeric substance by a charge injection means, wherein the monomer or the solution of monomer and oil is disposed within the chamber of a cell of an electrostatic atomizing device which includes the aforementioned cell and chamber a discharge spray means in communication with the cell, the formed polymer being transported to the discharge spray means and atomized into droplets, and a mechanism for passing a charge through the monomer or solution of monomer within the chamber, wherein the charge is sufficient to induce free radical polymerization of the monomer.
Abstract:
A system for the addition of a corrosion inhibitor to an engine cooling system wherein a container in the coolant system holds the corrosion inhibitor in a solid package which is withheld from contact with the coolant solution by a spring under load. The inhibitor package is counterbalanced by a pair of opposed springs with one spring being subject to corrosion when the corrosive effect of the coolant increases; corrosion of the spring allowing the inhibitor package to be urged into contact with the solution to provide treatment thereof.
Abstract:
A chemical-mixing and dispensing apparatus for providing a volume of a chemical mixture to a dispensing location includes a suitably connected and monitored water main flow coupled to one inlet of a Tee fitting, a fixed-volume container having therein a liquid detergent concentrate, the container being coupled to the other inlet of the Tee fitting. The outlet of the Tee fitting is placed in flow communication with a chemical mixture holding tank along one branch and with a control tank along another branch. The chemical mixture holding tank has an output line which is monitored by an electrically timed solenoid valve for controlling the dispensing of the contents of the holding tank to a spray nozzle. Flow to the control tank is monitored by a pressure regulator such that the pressure ceiling within the control tank remains at a level which is below the pressure ceiling of the holding tank. The control tank is coupled to the fixed volume container such that as flow from the control tank enters the fixed-volume container, equal volume of detergent concentrate is pushed out. Due solely to pressure differences created within the flow loop, caused by dispensing of the mixture from the mixture holding tank, flows of both liquid detergent concentrate and water occur and these flows are mixed by the Tee fitting.

Abstract:
A multiple stage cryogenic vacuum pump is disclosed for transferring matter or species between a gas and a vacuum chamber. The vacuum chamber has an orifice through which the matter or species moves and through which some of the gas leaks into the chamber. The chamber also has an interior surface which is spaced from the path of movement of the matter or species and encircles such path, and an internal divider extending to a position adjacent the interior surface and dividing the chamber into a first region adjacent the orifice and a second region downstream from the first region, with the interior surface extending in both regions. The surface is cooled by a single refrigerating device to below the condensation temperature of the gas, to produce a pressure below atmospheric in the first region and a lower pressure in the second region. The divider contains an aperture through which the matter or species travels and may itself be cooled to precool gas contacting it. The matter or species may be ions or may be a strip of material to be treated. In the latter case the gas which is cryopumped can be warmed and flowed countercurrent to the strip to precondition the strip prior to its entry into the vacuum chamber.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for mixing foundry mold catalyst and carrier gas when the catalyst is in the liquid phase and the carrier is in the gaseous phase at standard conditions of temperature and pressure. The catalyst liquid is heated to vaporize it and the resulting catalyst gas is then mixed with the carrier gas under control of an automatic gas flow regulator which maintains the mass ratio between the catalyst gas and the carrier gas at the desired level in the gaseous mixture notwithstanding variations in the flow rate of either or both gases. The gaseous mixture is then blown through foundry molds and cores to cure the resin binder therein.
Abstract:
An apparatus for dosing a treatment solution into a waste liquid comprises a device for measuring and dispensing a predetermined volume of solution, means for delivering treatment solution to and from the device and control means adapted to determine when waste liquid is present to be dosed and activate the device to dispense a measured volume of treatment solution into a waste liquid. The device has a container with an inlet and outlet diaphragm valve, and an air vent means for venting the chamber during filling and dispensing of treatment solution. Reversible actuation means is provided for simultaneously opening the inlet valve and closing the outlet valve to permit filling of the chamber with a treatment solution and for simultaneously closing the inlet valve and opening the outlet valve to permit dispensing of the measured volume of treatment solution. The control means operates the reversible actuation means to dispense treatment solution into the waste liquid and is adapted to close the outlet valve and open the inlet valve in the absence of waste liquid to be dosed.
