Abstract:
In accordance with the instant invention, a water-based hydraulic fluid, having improved low foaming properties can be obtained by blending 2-ethylhexanol with a conventional water-based hydraulic fluid composition.
Abstract:
Corrosion of metal workpieces by water-based synthetic metalworking fluids is inhibited by a small but effective amount of a corrosion inhibitor consisting essentially of a molybdate compound and a compound selected from the group consisting of nitrites, borates, alkanolamines, amine borates, amine salts of unsaturated fatty acids, alkanolamine sarcosinates, alkanolamine phosphates, and alkali, morpholine, and alkanolamine salts of arylsulfonamido carboxylic acids.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the use, as a hydraulic fluid or metalworking lubricant, of compositions having water as a base and yet possessing superior lubricating and wear preventing characteristics. The fluids of the invention comprise (1) a sulfurized molybdenum or antimony compound and (2) a phosphate ester or salt thereof. The compositions can be thickened, if desired, using for instance polyglycol, polyacrylic and polyvinyl alcohol-type thickeners. The use of corrosion inhibitors, metal deactivators and other adjuvants conventional in this art is also contemplated.
Abstract:
High molecular weight polyglycerol derivatives, useful as thickening agents for water-based lubricants, are prepared by oxyalkylating a polyglycerol with ethylene oxide or a mixture of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. The polyglycerol derivatives are characterized as having an average of more than five glycerol units, and in having more than 95% and preferably more than 99% alkylene oxide units. These compounds exhibit excellent shear strength and provide an improved hydrolube when incorporated therein.
Abstract:
A fluidic fluid composition containing lamellar micelles and which exhibits retro-viscous properties at noncryogenic temperatures is composed of 7.00-7.35% of a surfactant (preferably petroleum sulfonate having an average equivalent weight of 350-525), 50.00-54.00% of liquid hydrocarbon, 24.80-28.00% of water and optionally up to 13.00-13.95% of a cosurfactant (preferably an alcohol containing 1-20 carbon atoms) and/or electrolyte (preferably inorganic salt). The micelles within the composition must have an axial ratio of at least 3.5. The composition is substantially optically clear, phase stable, birefrigent, and the flow properties are such that substantially large increases in flow rates, e.g. 20-fold, can be realized at very small pressure increases, e.g. 5%. Additional additives to impart desired properties can be included with the composition.
Abstract:
A composite material is described which will provide low friction surfaces for materials in rolling or sliding contact and is self-lubricating and oxidation resistant up to and in excess of about 930.degree. C. The composite is comprised of a metal component which lends strength and elasticity to the structure, a fluoride salt component which provides lubrication and, lastly, a glass component which not only provides oxidation protection to the metal but may also enhance the lubrication qualities of the composite.
Abstract:
This invention relates to an aqueous drilling fluid containing a tall oil fraction as a lubricating additive, a method of drilling with said drilling fluid containing said tall oil lubricating additive and the tall oil lubricating additive per se.
Abstract:
A lubricant composition for use alone or in a lubricating base, comprising a finely divided carbonate of Group IIA metal and a halogenated organic lubricant.
Abstract:
An improved lubricating oil composition comprising a major amount by weight of oil of lubricating viscosity; a minor amount by weight of solid particles effective to improve the lubricating properties of the composition; and a minor amount of a nitrogen containing mixed ester of a carboxy containing interpolymer. This composition provides improved inhibition of sludge and varnish formation in use.
Abstract:
A machining fluid includes a basic component in the form of an aqueous solution and an aliphatic acid organic compound which is produced by a fermentation process comprising cultivating a microorganism in a culture medium containing a saccharide, nitrogen source and an inorganic salt and accumulated in a culture broth and separated and recovered from the culture broth.
