Abstract:
A dispensing system that includes an apparatus comprised of a container with a support surface, an opening in the upper portion for receiving items, a passageway in the lower portion for dispensing items, a guide surface to direct items into the passageway, a means for generating pulses of vacuum that draw pulses of air (or other fluid) into the container through the open passageway, and sufficient volume of available air (or other fluid) outside the passageway and outside the container to fill the vacuum generated inside the container. A preferred method of generating the vacuum pulses is injecting pulses of high-pressure fluid in thin sheets into the container through the open passageway with laminar flow against the support or guide surfaces. Items are lifted and separated by the influx of fluid. Upon termination of pulses, the volume inside the container collapses and items, carried by and buffered by exiting fluid, pass through the open passageway often at speeds in excess of those that would be generated by gravity alone.
Abstract:
A distributed monitoring and protection system for a distributed power network. The system includes a plurality of high-speed measuring units (MUs), wherein each MU is coupled to a power line to measure values of electrical parameters of the power line. Electrical parameters, such as current, voltage, power and frequency are measured by the MUs. The MUs communicate with a control unit (CU) over a high-speed communications network. The CU includes a processor executing algorithms for evaluating the measured parameters to determine the status of the power network and the MUs. The processor also executes fault detection and isolation by comparing the measured values against predetermined threshold values. When a fault is detected by the CU, protective action, such as tripping of a circuit breaker, may be initiated by the CU directly or by transmitting the tripping command over the high speed data network to a local MU. The local MU may then trip the circuit breaker. The availability at the CU of concurrent measurements from the plurality of MUs enables improved coordination and sequencing of protective actions.
Abstract:
Mixed olefin polymerization catalysts, methods for preparing olefin polymers using the catalysts, and polymers obtained therefrom are disclosed. The mixed catalyst system comprises the combination of (a) a Group 8-10 transition metal complex of a bidentate or tridentate ligand comprising at least one nitrogen donor selected from Set 1, (b) either a Group 8-10 transition metal complex of a bidentate or tridentate ligand comprising at least one nitrogen donor selected from Set 1 or a bidentate ligand comprising a nitrogen-nitrogen donor selected from Set 2, or a Group 4 transition metal complex of a multidnentate ligand comprising at least 1 cyclopentadienyl or indenyl ring selected from Set 3 or a titanium or chromium Ziegler-Natta catalyst selected from Set 4, and optionally (c) a compound Y.
Abstract:
A vehicle control system includes a variable displacement internal combustion engine, a transmission coupled to the variable displacement internal combustion engine, an intake manifold coupled to the variable displacement internal combustion engine, a throttle coupled to the intake manifold, an engine controller for controlling the throttle and the variable displacement internal combustion engine, and a transmission controller for controlling the transmission. The engine controller transfers a throttle position or load value to the transmission controller. This throttle position or load value is independent of the actual displacement of the variable displacement internal combustion engine.
Abstract:
Catalyst compositions useful for the polymerization or oligomerization of olefins are disclosed. Certain of the catalyst compositions comprise metal complexes of mono through tetradentate ligands comprising N-pyrrolyl substituted nitrogen donors bonded to the metal. Also disclosed are processes for the polymerization or oligomerization of olefins using the catalyst compositions.
Abstract:
A method for reaming a hole in a metal substrate that minimizes the tendency of long and stringy metal chips to be formed that can surround the reamer with a “steel wool-like” mesh or mass of material, as well as an improved reamer for carrying out this method. The reaming method involves longitudinally advancing the chamfered end of the reamer into the hole at an increased rate of at least about 5 mils (0.13 mm) per cutting edge as the hole is reamed during rotation of the reamer. For holes or bores having a length (L) that is at least about 3 times the cutting diameter (D) of the reamer, a preferred subsequent step is to momentarily reduce the rate of advance of the chamfered end into the hole to about 1 mil (0.025 mm) or less per cutting edge for from about 1 to about 5 rotations of the reamer. The improved reamer has a body, at least three flutes formed in the body, each flute terminating at a chamfered leading end and having a chamfer face proximate the chamfered end, the chamfer face having a chamfer angle of from about 20 to about 30° and having a leading edge of the margin that trails the rake face of the flute, i.e., a negative radial rake angle.
Abstract:
An apparatus for applying an adaptable pressure waveform to a patient's limb to augment blood flow comprises: an inflatable sleeve for applying pressure to the limb; pressure transducer for producing a pressure signal; pressure waveform applicator responsive to the pressure signal and a reference pressure waveform signal for controlling a supply of fluid to the sleeve so that the pressure in the sleeve is maintained near a varying pressure indicated by the reference pressure waveform signal; and waveform register for producing the reference pressure waveform signal indicative of a reference pressure waveform that includes a maximum pressure at a time within a cycle time period and a rate of pressure increase leading to the maximum pressure and wherein the waveform register includes waveform adaptor for allowing the rate of pressure increase to change from a first rate to a second rate without changing the maximum pressure.
Abstract:
An electronic control unit (ECU) includes a microcontroller, a first non-volatile memory bank, a second non-volatile memory bank and a volatile memory. The microcontroller is coupled to an external tool and executes a control algorithm, which controls a subsystem coupled to the ECU. The first non-volatile memory bank is coupled to the microcontroller and initially stores a plurality of initial calibration tables. The second non-volatile memory bank and the volatile memory are also coupled to the microcontroller. The microcontroller executes code, which calibrates the ECU without interrupting the normal operation of the subsystem.
Abstract:
A dispensing system having a hopper with at least one wall moveable to form a dispensing opening at the base of the hopper. At least one air knife is provided which blasts air upwardly into the hopper to lift, levitate, and mix the product within the hopper. Upon termination of the air blast, the product falls downwardly into the base for the hopper, and a selected number of items fall through the dispensing opening. The remaining items tend to bridge the dispensing opening, thereby blocking further dispensing of the product. During subsequent air blasts, the product is repeatedly levitated, agitated, and allowed to drop through the dispensing opening to ultimately dispense the entirety of the product from the hopper.
