Abstract:
An apparatus and method for alleviating excessive pressure development on a body area includes a cushion having bottom and top surfaces which are spaced apart. The top surface has a plurality of channels formed therethrough. A compressible inner layer is disposed between the top and bottom surfaces, and a plurality of elongate, inflexible members are supported by the inner layer and are disposed at least partially within the channels. The members have first ends that extend through the channels to project beyond the top surface. Pressure applied to the first ends causes the members to be displaced axially along the channels toward the bottom surface without deformation. Pressure produced by body contact creates point pressures on the body area, and displacement of the members maintains the plurality of point pressures on the body area, alleviating excessive pressure. The apparatus includes a enclosure cover and the members have large, tapered ends. The apparatus may also include a heating or cooling system and may also be incorporated into a vehicle seat.
Abstract:
Therapeutic devices that provide support or pressure to tissue. Devices contain a material that is capable of being contracted from its relaxed state to an evacuated state. The material applies pressure to the tissue of a patient when the material is in its relaxed state. Reduction of pressure by application of a vacuum results in a contracted state of the device, so that the device can be applied or delivered to a patient. Release of vacuum results in a return to the relaxed state, thus providing a maximum desirable pressure to tissue and avoiding the possibility of over-pressure which can result in tissue damage or necrosis.
Abstract:
A therapeutic vibrator comprising a motor contained in a housing, a diaphragm mounted on said housing, and a reciprocating arm connecting the motor to the diaphragm. The housing is fitted with at least one one-way air valve, and at least one air hole so that in operation, the changing volume in the housing effects the pumping of air across the motor and any circuitry to provide cooling. To improve efficiency, a divider plate with at least one air hole is disposed proximate the reciprocating to limit the volume of the pumping chamber.
Abstract:
An air-blowing assembly for providing cooling air to the user of a spa, jetted bathtub or other heated water-containing member. The assembly has an air blower with an air blower inlet which received air from outside of the area of the spa. The blower conducts cooling air into a manifold. The manifold directs cooling air out of a series of vents on the upper lip of the spa. The air vents are adjustable in direction so that the user of the spa can direct cooling air to alleviate discomfort from an otherwise hot and moist atmosphere.
Abstract:
This invention provides apparatus for performing a combination of compensating and sucking chi. Generally, the device includes a housing having an inlet and an outlet; a first treating member connected to the inlet of the housing, having a terminal opening and a plurality of holes in the housing close to the terminal opening. The device further includes a second treating member having a heating device connected to the outlet of the housing; and an air pump arranged in the housing to communicate the outlet with the inlet. The invention also provides an apparatus with a plurality of first treating members and second treating members. With the apparatus of the invention, a vacuum can be formed in the first treating member by driving the pump when the first treating member is contacted with and covers a location of the patient's body.
Abstract:
A warm air massager for heating and massaging a body part includes a massage node which includes openings for directing streams of heated air to the body part being massaged. The body part is massaged by the reciprocating motion of the massage node produced by an internal massage motor. The massage motor may rotate to cause an eccentric connector to impart reciprocating motion to a shaft coupled to the massage node. The massage motor may be located within the housing, within the massage node, or there may be multiple massage motors located in each of the housing and the massage node. Intake ambient air enters the massage housing by means of a fan which withdraws ambient air from outside, directs the ambient air through a heater element and directs streams of the heated air through the massage node to the body part being massaged. Each of the fan, the heater element and the massage motor or motors may include multiple settings. The fan and massage motor are preferably separately controlled.
Abstract:
An electric foot massaging assembly is provided including a slipper mount. A flexible slipper is positioned on the slipper mount with an opening formed in an upper extent thereof for receiving a foot therein. A roller assembly includes a plurality of rollers mounted on the slipper mount for massaging a foot within the slipper. A motor is included for rotating the rollers.
Abstract:
A cold therapy system for applying a cooling pad to an area of the body of the user. The system comprises a portable insulated cooler having a lid and serving as a reservoir for water and ice. A pump is located within a housing affixed to the exterior of the cooler. The pump has an inlet operatively connected to the reservoir through the adjacent cooler wall. The pump has an outlet connected by an insulated delivery tube to the inlet of a pad. The outlet of the pad is connected by an insulated return tube, through the cooler wall to which the pump housing is affixed, to the reservoir. The pump is provided with a pulse-width modulating circuit having an electronic switch output that switches an intermittent drive current to the pump motor according to any one of a number of predetermined operating modes selectable by the operator through the use of a manual switch. Each of the operating modes provides the pad with a predetermined and repeatable temperature by altering the operating duty cycle of the drive current to the motor, the drive current being a combination of a medium fixed frequency pulse train having a fixed duty cycle and a very low fixed frequency DC pulse having a variable pulse width. The intermittent running of the pump motor further results in a compressive massaging effect by the pad.
Abstract:
A therapeutic pad is used in footwear which has a liquid absorbent to prevent liquid leakage in the event the sealed envelope of the pad is ruptured. The footwear includes a pair of compartments which substantially surround the foot cavity for receiving the therapeutic pad.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for treating a patient by electrotherapy and fluidized bed thermal therapy. A body portion of a patient is submerged in a fluidizable bed of solid particles, and the bed is selectively fluidized and de-fluidized as desired while controlling the temperature of the bed of solid particles. Electrotherapy treatment is applied to the portion of the body of the patient submerged in the bed of solid particles through electrodes attached to the body part which are connected to an electrical generator which produces radio frequency signals in continuous or modulated modes. The electrotherapy and fluidized bed thermal therapy may be applied consecutively or concurrently to the body part for treatment thereof.
