    Abstract: A refractory glass fiber having a use temperature of greater than 1000.degree. C., up to at least 1260.degree. C., having an after service mechanical integrity comparable to conventional refractory ceramic fiber and which is non-durable in physiological fluids, consisting essentially of the product of silica, magnesia and optionally zirconia, is produced from a melt, optionally containing a viscosity modifier.
