The present invention provides a lubricating composition comprising (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) a friction modifier; (c) a corrosion inhibitor; (d) an antiwear agent; and (e) a product prepared by heating together: (i) a dispersant; (ii) 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole or a hydrocarbyl-substituted 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, or oligomers thereof; (iii) a borating agent;and (iv) optionally a dicarboxylic acid of an aromatic compound selected from the group consisting of 1,3 diacids and 1,4 diacids, or (v) optionally a phosphorus acid compound, said heating being sufficient to provide a product of (i), (ii), (iii) and optionally (iv), which is soluble in an oil of lubricating viscosity. The invention further provides a use for the lubricating composition in a transmission.

A lubricant composition for a final drive axle oil comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity, one or more dispersants and one or more phosphorus compounds wherein the kinematic viscosity of the lubricant composition at 100° C. is greater than 10 mm2/s and wherein the amount by weight of the dispersant is greater than the amount by weight of the phosphorus compounds and any sulfur compounds which may optionally be present.

Continuously variable transmissions are lubricated by supplying to the transmission a composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity and an oil-soluble zinc salt containing at least one hydrocarbyl group of at least 4 carbon atoms. The amount of the zinc salt is sufficient to provide an increased steel-on-steel dynamic coefficient of friction for the composition, being at least 0.125. The composition is substantially free from thiophosphate salts and exhibits a copper corrosion rating of 1B or better (ASTM-130).

A nitrogen-containing ester derived from a carboxy-containing interpolymer having a reduced specific viscosity (RSV) of from about 0.05 to about 2, said interpolymer being derived from at least two monomers, (i) one of said monomers being at least one of an aliphatic olefin containing from 2 to about 30 carbon atoms and a vinyl aromatic monomer and (ii) the other of said monomers being at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated acylating agent, said ester being characterized by the presence within its polymeric structure of each of the following groups which are derived from the carboxy groups of said interpolymer: (A) from about 20 to about 70 mole % based on moles of carboxyl groups in said interpolymer, of ester groups containing from about 13 to about 19 carbon atoms; (B) from about 80 to about 30 mole %, based on moles of carboxyl groups in said interpolymer, of ester groups containing from about 8 to about 12 carbon atoms, optionally; (C) up to about 20 mole %, based on moles of carboxyl groups in said interpolymer, of ester groups containing from 2 to 7 carbon atoms; wherein from about 93 to about 97% of the carboxy groups derived from the carboxy-containing interpolymer are ester groups, the balance of the carboxy groups comprising residual carboxylic acid or anhydride groups which are then (D) reacted with at least one amino compound having an average of from 1 to about 1.1 primary or secondary amino groups, to convert from about 5 up to less than 50% of the carboxylic acid or anhydride groups to carbonyl-amino groups, with the unreacted carboxylic acid or anhydride groups remaining as (E) residual carboxylic acid or anhydride groups. A homogeneous composition comprising (A) at least one polymeric carboxylic ester viscosity improver optionally containing nitrogen-containing groups, and (B) at least one hydrocarbyl group substituted ashless dispersant wherein the hydrocarbyl group has M.sub.n ranging from about 200 to about 800, and the weight ratio of (A):(B) ranges from about 3:1 to about 1:3, where in one embodiment, the polymeric carboxylic ester viscosity improver is (1) a polyacrylate ester copolymer, optionally containing nitrogen containing groups, containing from 2 to about 30 carbon atoms in the ester group and having M.sub.n ranging from about 10,000 to about 150,000, and in another embodiment, the polymeric carboxylic ester viscosity improver is (2) an esterified carboxy-containing interpolymer, having RSV ranging from about 0.05 to about 0.35 before esterification, optionally neutralized with an amine, said interpolymer derived from at least two monomers, one of said monomers being at least one of an aliphatic olefin containing from 2 to about 30 carbon atoms and a vinyl aromatic monomer and the other of said monomers being at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated acylating agent, characterized by the presence within the polymeric structure of ester groups having from 2 to about 30 carbon atoms.

This invention relates to a composition, comprising: (A) a compound represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein in Formula (A-I), R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are independently hydrocarbyl groups, X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are independently O or S, and n is zero to 3; and (B) an acylated nitrogen-containing compound having a substituent of at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms, In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (C) a second phosphorus compound other than (A), said second phosphorus compound being a phosphorus acid, phosphorus acid ester, phosphorus acid salt, or derivative thereof, In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (D) an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of an organic sulfur acid, carboxytic acid or phenol. In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (E) a thiocarbamate. These compositions are useful in providing lubricating compositions and functional fluids with enhanced antiwear properties.

This invention relates to a composition, comprising: (A) a Mannich dispersant having a base number in the range of about 45 to about 90; (B) a boron compound; and (C) an organic phosphorus acid or ester, or derivative of said phosphorus acid or ester. In one embodiment, this composition further comprises (D) a thiocarbamate. In one embodiment, this composition further comprises (E) a nitrogen-containing ester of a carboxy-containing interpolymer. These compositions are useful as additives for lubricants and functional fluids, and are particularly useful as additives for automatic transmission fluids for enhancing the torque characteristics such automatic transmission fluids.
