Abstract: An audio headset sub-assembly (600, 700, 900, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500) providing the operative functionality for true wireless headphones/headset (100) includes circuitry operative to effect wireless communication and audio signal processing, and a battery (212). These circuits and battery (212) are contained in a sealed enclosure (610, 710, 1210, 1310). In one embodiment, the sub-assembly (600, 700, 900, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500) includes all electronic components for wireless communications and audio signal processing, and a battery (212), but does not include a speaker. A microphone (240) may be part of the sub-assembly (600, 700, 900, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500) or may be external. In another embodiment, a speaker (230) is part of the sub-assembly (600, 700, 900, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500) as well. The sub-assembly (600, 700, 900, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500) may include several cavities (1254, 1252) and vents (1264, 1262) before and behind the speaker (230) for optimal acoustic performance. The sub-assembly (600, 700, 900, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500), and any necessary external audio components, can be inserted in an external housing (104) forming the visual product appearance and the anthropometric comfort and fit design of a true wireless headphone or headset (100).

Abstract: A dual-microphone arrangement (300) provides improve voice performance in a wireless headset (12). A vibration sensor (1130) is used for voice pickup and will add low-frequency voice audio content in windy conditions. An equalizer (810) is used to restore low-frequency voice audio content in wind-free conditions. Depending on the measured wind power, the output will derive more signal from the equalizer (810) or more signal from the vibration sensor (1130).

Abstract: A communication protocol provides diversity in UL and DL between a headset and a host device that transmits right and left audio data on separate channels. Each ear piece establishes an independent channel to the host device, and there is another channel between them. Each ear piece monitors not only its own channel to the host, but also the other ear piece's channel to the host. One ear piece may acknowledge the host device for a correctly received packet, which the other ear piece missed, on the other ear piece's channel to the host device, avoiding retransmissions. The eavesdropped data is provided to the other ear piece on the shared channel, providing for path diversity in DL. The ear pieces may exchange picked-up voice content to send to the host device, providing for path diversity in UL.

Using a common clock broadcast by the host device (19), the ear pieces (12a, 12b) may indicate which audio information was missed and should be forwarded on the communication path (P2, 540, 1620) between the two ear pieces (12a, 12b).

Abstract: A voice pick-up arrangement (500) provides improved voice performance in a wireless headset (12) exposed to loud environmental noise. A air microphone (220) and a vibration sensor (230) are used for sound pickup. An adaptive filter (450) may be used to subtract the noise from the vibration sensor output in a subtractor (460), thus producing a clear voice signal. A noise level may be monitored and be used for determining whether the adaptive filter is used or for determining the coefficients of the adaptive filter (450). A beam-forming array may be used to suppress a voice component of the picked-up air microphone audio signal.
