Abstract: One embodiment of the invention is a flexible cryogenic probe tip. The flexible probe tip has a linear freeze zone at a distal end of the probe that allows for its placement and precisely controlled movements. The flexible cryogenic probe tip precisely conforms to the target tissue surface to create a linear lesion. In addition, the probe tip is steerable to facilitate proper placement with minimal access points into a patient's body. Various configurations of the flexible probe tip allow it to conform and ablate tissue of many sizes, shapes, and/or dimensions. Methods of utilizing the cryogenic probe tip include steps of positioning the distal end at a tissue site for at least one ablative procedure, maneuvering the distal end to the tissue site, directing a cryogen from the supply source to the distal end, controlling a flow of cryogen from the supply source to the distal end and back to the supply source, and segmenting control of the distal end mechanically or through the step of controlling the flow of cryogen.

Abstract: A cryogenic medical device is disclosed for use in minimally invasive surgical procedures. Various configurations of cryoprobes are designed in combination with a clamp to form a cryoclamp for the treatment of damaged, diseased, cancerous or other unwanted tissues. The device is an integrated cryoablation probe with a hinged clamp that allows for single entry into the chest cavity through a thorascopic port, by surgical or other means. The integrated cryoablation probe allows for the clamping of tissue as well as freezing with a single device. The clamp acts as an outer sheath so that when closed, directional freezing of the cryoprobe is achieved on the opposing probe surface away from the clamp or on an internal surface that is between the clamp. The cryoclamp may be a removable attachment or integrated into the unitary device.

Abstract: A cryosurgical system including a computer system programmed with software configured to perform the following steps: a) capturing at least one first view of a region of interest in a human body; b) capturing at least one second view of the region of interest; c) outlining the region of interest and at least one area outside the region of interest with the assistance of an operator; d) constructing a 3-dimensional model of the region of interest and the at least one area outside the region of interest utilizing the at least one first view and the at least one second view of the region of interest; and e) utilizing the 3-dimensional model of the region of interest and the at least one area outside the region of interest to determine at least one cryosurgical probe placement location.

Abstract: A system for assisting a surgeon in placing at least one ablation device into a treatment region of a patient, where the system includes at least one computer system having a display, a user interface and software, is described. The system uses patient image data of the treatment region to generate an image of the treatment region on the display and identifies the treatment region to ablate with a target. Tissue properties of the treatment region are identified and used to perform thermal modeling. Treatment parameters are generated and an ablation zone is calculated. A computer system display is generated showing (a) the number of ablation devices required to ablate the treatment region and the location and orientation of each ablation device in the treatment region and (b) the ablation zone.

Abstract: An ablation instrument having a longitudinal body with a plurality of sidewalls that form a flexible sleeve, where the plurality of sidewalls that form the flexible sleeve are slotless. The longitudinal body has a proximal end, a distal end, and a central axis. A luminary space is formed within the plurality of sidewalls and at least one internal component is inserted through the proximal end of the longitudinal body and extends through the luminary space to the distal end. The internal component is interconnected with a deflection mechanism for controlling the distal end of the longitudinal body such that the distal end is capable of multi-planar movement.
