Abstract: Disclosed is a process for making a gas diffusion electrode that comprises an electrically conductive substrate, a gas diffusion layer (GDL) and an active layer (AL). The process comprises forming the GDL and/or the AL by pressing and/or rolling a mass obtained by subjecting electrically conductive carbon material and polymeric binder and, in the case of the AL, electroactive catalyst to high energy mixing in a liquid medium, followed by the separation of solid matter from the liquid medium and, optionally, drying of the separated solid matter.

Abstract: A method for the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia comprises: (a) forming from a gas mixture comprising nitrogen and oxygen an atmospheric pressure nonthermal plasma (APNTP) in a plasma device, (b) introducing the APNTP into an aqueous electrolyte solution to form a solution of one or more species of formula NOx−, (c) contacting the solution of (b) with the cathode of an electrochemical cell which comprises a catalyst which is capable of catalyzing the electrochemical reduction of the one or more species of formula NOx− to NH3, and (d) applying a potential or current over the electrochemical cell to effect the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia.
