Abstract: Apparatus and method for operating a primary bed ion exchange resin demineralizer and for regenerating and backwashing the resins thereof. A spider-type distributor assembly having integral flow control means is installed in the top head of a resin-containing exchange vessel, to permit resin bed volume to substantially occupy the entire vessel volume, limited only by the in-service swelling characteristics of the resin. An auxiliary vessel, termed the resin drop tank, is provided for receiving a portion of the resin from the exchange vessel to accomplish backwashing of such portion outside the exchange vessel and all or none of the remaining resin inside the exchange vessel before replacing and regenerating the resin.

Abstract: A DEVICE WHICH INCLUDES A MANUALLY OPERATED COMBINED DISPENSER AND APPLICATOR FOR PRESSURE SENSITIVE TAPE AND CONSISTS OF A HOUSING HAVING A SUPPORT FOR A ROLL OF SAID TAPE. THE LEADING END OF THE TAPE, WHEN SUITABLY THREADED IN THE STRUCTURE, IS LOOPED BY A GUIDE FOR SLIDEABLE ENGAGEMENT ON THE NONTACKY SIDE WITH AN OUTSIDE RUNNER PLATE AND CONTINUES FOR TERMINAL ENGAGEMENT ON THE TACKY SIDE WITH A OUTSIDE SPACED AND OFFSET ADHESION PLATE CARRYING A CUTTER FOR THE TERMINAL END OF THE TAPE. A CYCLE OF OPERATION IS ACCOMPLISHED BY SETTING THE APPARATUS DOWN AND BY HAVING THE RUNNER PLATE IN ALIGNMENT AND ENGAGEMENT WITH THE SURFACE TO RECEIVE THE TAPE WHEREBY ADHESION TAKES PLACE BETWEEN THE TACKY SIDE OF THE TAPE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE RUNNER PLATE AND SAID SURFACES. THEREAFTER,THE APPARATUS IS MOVED REARWARDLY TO DISENGAGE THE LEADING END FROM THE CUTTER AND THE ADHESION PLATE AND THEN ADVANCED FORWARDLY FOR PULLOUT OF THE TAPE AND APPLICATION OF SAID TAPE BY THE RUNNER PLATE ON THE APPLIED SURFACES. NEAR THE END OF THE TAPE APPLICATION AREA, THE APPARATUS IS LIFTED FROM SAID SURFACES AND SUFFICIENT FREE TAPE IS PULLED FROM THE ROLL TO ENABLE THE ADHESION PLATE AND CUTTER TO THE INTRODUCED UNDER THE TAPE FOR CUTTING THE TERMINAL END THEREOF AND THEN APPLYING THE FREED END OF THE TAPE BY HAND TO THE END OF THE SURFACES OF APPLICATION.

Abstract: A fluid distributor for use in ion exchange vessel assemblies contain ion exchange resins, particularly fixed-bed assemblies. The distributor includes a hub containing a central fluid passage and at least two sets of laterally disposed, fluid-distributing conduits. One of the sets of lateral conduits has holes screened by a fine, resin-retaining mesh. A remotely-controllable valve assembly disposed in the hub regulates flow between the hub and the sets of lateral conduits, so that flow between the screened conduits and the hub may be shut off. The hub also includes means for adjusting the relative rate of fluid flow through the sets of lateral conduits.

Abstract: A clarifier for purifying liquids containing solids or contaminants. The liquid to be treated enters the clarifier and is directed into a primary sludge contact zone where it is mixed with recirculating sludge. Liquid from the primary sludge contact zone is pumped via flumes to the entrance of a settling corridor for horizontal flow therethrough. The liquid flows through the corridor forming an upper free-fall zone and a lower sludge zone as the precipitates settle out. As the liquid reaches the settling corridor exit, it approaches a point of positive separation of the clarified liquid above from the sludge stream below, which is formed by the kinetic capture of precipitates settling from the free-fall zone into the sludge zone of increasing velocity. The clarified liquid and the sludge stream enter a separation zone where they are caused to contact a vertical flow directing partition wall causing the sludge stream, of higher velocity, to pass thereunder back into the primary contact zone and the clarified liquid, of lower velocity, to pass thereover to be boosted through flumes into a secondary settling basin for polishing. Polished liquid then flows over weirs to outlet while the sludge collected in the basin is directed to the entrance of the settling corridor.
