Abstract: A system and method for detecting delivery items includes a hardware processor that is operably connected to a light detector and a camera positioned at a sensing location along a moving surface that moves a delivery item. The processor may be configured to perform operations that include receiving a light status signal from the light detector, the light status signal having a first state when a light beam directed across the moving surface is detected at the light detector, which indicates absence of the delivery item, and a second state when the light beam is not detected at the light detector, which indicates presence of the delivery item, receiving image data from the camera, which includes images at the sensing location, and modifying the light status signal based on the image data when the light status signal and the image data disagree on the number of delivery items.

Abstract: Systems and methods for tracking a mail piece to be carried and delivered by a mail service are disclosed. In some embodiments, a disclosed method comprises: obtaining an image of the mail piece; generating a hash value of the image of the mail piece by applying a hash function to the image of the mail piece; determining a match between the hash value and one of a plurality of stored hash values, each of the plurality of stored hash values being generated by applying the hash function to a respective image of a corresponding other mail piece using an application on a user device of a corresponding user; identifying, based on a result of the determining the match, a user associated with mailing of the mail piece; applying an identity (ID) tag on the mail piece; tracking, based on the identity (ID) tag, the mail piece to determine its delivery status information; and providing the delivery status information of the mail piece to a mobile device of the user.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a system and a method for extracting a computer readable code from a captured image of a mailpiece or parcel using downsampling and edge detection. The system can include a reader configured to capture an image of an item having a computer readable code positioned thereon and a processor in data communication with the reader. The processor can generate captured image data of the item including the computer readable code, downconvert the captured image data to generate a downconverted image data and detect an edge of the computer readable code. The processor can also identify a position of the computer readable code in the downconverted image data and store or process only the identified computer readable code.

Abstract: This application relates to a method and a system for compressing a captured image of an item such as a mailpiece or parcel. The system may include a memory configured to store images of a plurality of items captured while the items are being transported and a processor in data communication with the memory. The processor may be configured to receive or retrieve one or more of the captured images, perform a wavelet scattering transform on the one or more captured images, perform deep learning on the wavelet scattering transformed images to classify the wavelet scattering transformed images and compress the classified wavelet scattering transformed images. Various embodiments can significantly improve a compression efficiency, a communication efficiency of compressed data and save a memory space so that the functionality of computing devices is significantly improved.

Abstract: Techniques for inspecting a vehicle using a robot and a home base configured to be situated on a vehicle lot are presented. The robot has a vertical dimension that permits the robot to pass under a vehicle on the vehicle lot. The robot includes at least one sensor and is configured to perform actions including: receiving charging at the home base; traversing a distance from the home base to a vehicle present on the vehicle lot; determining an identification of the vehicle; passing under the vehicle; and obtaining sensor data regarding the vehicle. A computer in communication with the robot is configured to perform actions including: receiving the identification of the vehicle and the sensor data from the robot; analyzing the sensor data based on at least comparison data; determining, based on the analyzing, to send an alert regarding the vehicle; and sending the alert regarding the vehicle.

Abstract: Systems and methods for updating map data are disclosed. A system can include a mobile delivery device that is configured to be transported to a plurality of delivery locations by a parcel carrier. The system may further include a computer readable storage medium and one or more processors. The system may store map data associated with a geographic data. Using the mobile delivery device, the system can receive a plurality of positions during delivery of parcels to a plurality of delivery locations associated with the geographic region. Based on the plurality of positions, the system may determine a delivery route of a parcel carrier, and, based on the delivery route, the system can generate updated map data.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a system and method for detecting an address block and barcode on a captured image of an item, and reading the detected barcode using connected component analysis. In one aspect, the method includes binarizing a captured image to generate a binarized image having pixel values, inverting the pixel values of the binarized image, processing the inverted pixel values, and filtering the processed image by area. The method may also include machine learning the processed image to cluster objects in the processed image into a plurality of groups using the filtered image, and determining a number of objects in each of the clustered groups by performing additional operations on the clustered objects to detect the address block. The method may also include selecting the group having the greatest number of objects as the address block, and extracting the selected address block.
