Abstract:
Drift components in the output of a gyro in a strapdown inertial navigation system are measured by modulating the speed of the gyro wheel in a sinusoidal manner. True angular motion components acting on the gyro are modulated in proportion to the modulation of the wheel speed, while drift components which act on the gyro and which are independent of true motion and wheel momentum are not modulated. By the use of a drift calculator or selected bandpass filters responsive to the modulated output from the gyro, the drift component and true angular motion component may be separated, and the navigation system may be compensated for drift. A unique linear-parabolic modulator produces a digital output equivalent to a sinusoid which may be used to modulate the gyro wheel speed in the appropriate manner.

Contamination of cooling air to the turbine blades of a gas turbine is prevented by a centrifugal filter at the inlet ends of the coolant passages in the rotor.

There is described nickel, cobalt and nickel-cobalt alloy coating compositions having improved hot corrosion resistance. In particular, an improved MCrAlY type alloy coating composition consists essentially of, by weight, approximately 8-30 percent chromium, 5-15 percent aluminum, up to 1 percent reactive metal selected from the group consisting of yttrium, scandium, thorium and the other rare earth elements and 3-12 percent of a noble metal selected from the group consisting of platinum or rhodium, the balance being selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt and nickel-cobalt.
Abstract:
A transceiver, adapted for use as either a master or a slave in a duplex pair, has a single, voltage-tunable, solid state oscillator to provide the carrier frequency wave, a small portion of which is mixed with the received wave and applied therewith to a single ended mixer; an AGC-controlled loop cancels transmitter input modulation from the receiver output. The oscillator of the master transceiver is locked to a desired carrier frequency by a feedback loop including a tuning cavity adjusted to a frequency different from that of the slave transceiver by the common IF frequency; the slave transceiver is first locked to the frequency of its tuning cavity and thereafter, upon sensing output from its IF amplifier (from the master), is switched to operate in response to AFC controlled by the received signal, such that the master and slave transceivers are locked together at frequencies differing by their common IF frequency. A single integrating amplifier provides demodulator and AFC filtering and, together with a bistable device, initial sweeping of the oscillator control voltage.
Abstract:
A simple, substantially fail-safe jet engine bleed used for aircraft accessories is designed to have a small bleed port area for high power operating conditions of the engine and a larger bleed port area for lesser power operating conditions. The variable port can be made to vary its size in response to the power lever position, engine rpm, compressor bleed temperature or an engine pressure ratio.

There is described an oxidatively stable resin consisting essentially of a heat cured mixture of polyphenylquinoxaline resin and polyquinoxaline resin containing 1-10%, by weight, of a dispersed finely divided particulate filler material selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina and graphite, the weight ratio of polyphenylquinoxaline resin to polyquinoxaline resin ranging from approximately 1.9 to 19. The resin may be reinforced with high strength filaments.
Abstract:
A method and a mold for casting high temperature alloys having as an ingredient an element that reacts with the mold and core material and is thereby depleted during alloy solidification. A reservoir which is shaped to minimize depletion of the element is positioned above the article cavity in the mold to supply alloy to the top of the article cavity. As solidification proceeds, the molten alloy in the reservoir serves to enrich the solidifying alloy in the article forming portion of the mold with the depleted reactive ingredient.
