Abstract: Microoptical layers, glazing units including the microoptical layers, and transfer tapes that may be used to provide the microoptical layers are provided. The transfer tape includes a removable template layer having a structured surface, a backfill layer having a first surface disposed on at least a portion of the structured surface of the template layer, and a microstructured surface opposite the structured surface. The microstructured surface together with a layer disposed on the microstructured surface is an anisotropic diffuser.

Abstract: Described herein is an article comprising (i) bead film comprising a binder resin layer and a plurality of microspheres partially embedded in the binder resin layer such that a portion of the microspheres outwardly protrude a first distance from the surface of the binder resin layer; (ii) a stabilizing layer disposed on the outwardly protruding microspheres opposite the binder resin layer, wherein the stabilizing layer intimately conforms to the protruding microspheres, and wherein the stabilizing layer has a Tg less than 100 C and a storage modulus at 150° C. of at least 1.5 MPa; and (iii) a release agent, wherein (a) the binder resin layer comprises the release agent, (b) the stabilizing layer comprises the release agent, and/or (c) an intermediate layer comprises the release agent, wherein the intermediate layer is disposed between the monolayer of microspheres and the stabilizing layer, with the proviso that when the binder resin layer has a fluorine content along the polymeric backbone greater than 65 wt %, the stabilizing layer comprises a release agent selected from a silicone and a fluoropolymer. Also disclosed herein are methods of making thermoformable bead films.

Abstract: There is provided a thermoformable article comprising at least a first surface having a binder resin layer comprising a fluorine-containing polymer, where the binder resin layer has a first major surface opposite a second major surface; and a plurality of microspheres partially and adhered to the first major surface of the binder resin layer; where the fluorine-containing polymer is a partially fluorinated polymer derived from at least one fluorine containing monomer and two or more non-fluorinated monomers having at least one active hydrogen functional group, and further wherein at least one but not all of the active hydrogen functional groups are reacted with at least one curing agent having latent functionality. In some instances the curing agent comprises polyisocyanate. There is also provided a thermoset article derived from such thermoformable articles.

Abstract: Article comprising a first, microstructured layer comprising a first material, and having first and second opposed major surfaces, the first major surface being a microstructured surface, and the microstructured surface having peaks and valleys, wherein the peaks are microstructural features each having a height defined by the distance between the peak of the respective microstructural feature and an adjacent valley; and a second layer comprising at least one of a crosslinkable or crosslinked composition, wherein at least a portion of the second major surface of the second layer is directly attached to at least a portion of the first major surface of the first, microstructured layer. Articles described herein are useful, for example, for optical film applications. For example. An article including a regular prismatic microstructured pattern can act as a totally internal reflecting film for use as a brightness enchancement film; an article including a corner-cube prismatic microstructured pattern can act as a retroreflecting film or element for use as reflecting film when combined with a back reflector; and an article including a prismatic microstructured pattern can act as an optical turning film or element for use in an optical display.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides novel light emitting devices including AMOLED displays, based on transparent OLED architecture, where a laminated nanostructured light extraction film can produce axial and integrated optical gains as well as improved angular luminance and color. Generally, the transparent AMOLED displays (100) with laminated sub-micron extractors (110a-c) include: (a) an extractor (110a) on a transparent substrate (112a) for light outcoupling on both sides of the transparent device (120); or (b) an extractor (110b) on a reflective film (112b) for providing light outcoupling off the bottom side of the bottom-emitting (BE) AMOLED (120); or (c) an extractor (110c) on a light absorbing film (112c) for providing outcoupling off the bottom side of the BE AMOLED (120) combined with improved ambient contrast.

Abstract: There is provided a thermoformable article comprising at least a first surface having a binder resin layer comprising a fluorine-containing polymer, where the binder resin layer has a first major surface opposite a second major surface; and a plurality of microspheres partially and adhered to the first major surface of the binder resin layer; where the fluorine-containing polymer is a partially fluorinated polymer derived from at least one fluorine containing monomer and two or more non-fluorinated monomers having at least one active hydrogen functional group, and further wherein at least one but not all of the active hydrogen functional groups are reacted with at least one curing agent having latent functionality. Abstract: An oriented heat-treated principal film capable of thermally-induced self-forming, including one or more (co)polymers and exhibiting a relaxation temperature (Tr), the oriented heat-treated principal film having opposed first and second major faces, a land portion on the second major face and one or more modification zones on the second major face. A cross-linked (co)polymeric carrier layer is in contact with the first major face. Each modification zone includes a central closed portion and a rim portion surrounding the central closed portion and being surrounded by a land portion. An average thickness of each rim portion is greater than an average thickness of the land portion surrounding the central closed portion. An average thickness of each central closed portion is less than the average thickness of the land portion surrounding the central portion. Methods for making such films and adhesive articles comprising such films are also disclosed.

Abstract: Multilayer stacks that can be used as decorative microsphere articles. The decorative microsphere articles can be a durable and aesthetically pleasing substitute for anodized aluminum and other matte metallic surfaces. The decorative microsphere articles are durable and can have a bright diffused appearance of any desired color, for example white, gold, silver, red, or other colors, while being capable of being manufactured using a roll-to-roll process. The decorative microsphere articles can also provide novel optical effects than can change at different viewing angles, including, for example, changing color with view angle, changing sharpness or clarity of an image or icon with view angle, and the like, that may allow customers to differentiate their products.

Abstract: Transfer tapes and methods of making transfer tapes are described. In one aspect, the transfer tape comprises a template layer having a structured surface; a backfill layer disposed on at least a portion of the template layer, the backfill layer having a microstructured surface opposite the structured surface; and a layer disposed adjacent the microstructured surface, wherein the layer disposed adjacent the microstructured surface has a refractive index that differs from the backfill layer. The microstructured surface together with the adjacent layer functions as a diffusive layer, or in other words a diffusive interface. Also described are microoptical glazing and methods of making microoptical glazing as well as insulated glazing units and methods of making insulated glazing units.
