    Abstract: A precision constant-speed control for a motor or other prime mover driving an output shaft and equipped with a speed control device, such as a servo valve, reponsive to an applied D.C. control signal. The precision control includes a prime signal generator developing a prime electrical signal having a frequency that varies with changes in the shaft speed; the prime signal is applied to a solid-state synchronous gating detector, having a filter connected to its output, to develop a D.C. control signal which varies in amplitude as a linear function of the frequency of the prime signal. This control signal is applied to the speed control device to maintain the prime mover speed constant within about one percent.

    Abstract: A sensor for sensing movement of a metal object, such as a railway wheel, along a given path, comprising three sensing coils, all tuned to the same operating frequency, spaced along the path with their axes intersecting the path, and connected in series in three consecutive arms of a pentagon bridge. An oscillator, connected to the remaining two bridge arms, excites the coils at their operating frequency. A metal object moving along the path disturbs the fields of the coils in a sequence depending upon its direction of movement; the direction and velocity of the metal object are indicated in output signals derived by additively combining and synchronously detecting the signal voltages developed at the bridge terminals. In the preferred construction, the two end coils each include a few turns encompassing the central coil to reduce mutual coupling between adjacent coils.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus, operable over a given speed range, for detecting the speed of an object moving past a sensor which develops two electrical signals, each enduring for a time interval that varies inversely with the speed of the object and in inverse relation to the distance between the object and the sensor, the signals being spaced by a time gap that varies inversely with the speed of the object and that also varies as a function of the distance between the object and the sensor. A first capacitor circuit, charged prior to initiation of the sensor signals, is discharged at a given rate during one signal and discharged at a second faster rate thereafter until the other signal starts or until expiration of an extended time interval longer than the longest time gap for the speed range. A similar capacitor circuit is discharged at the given rate during the other signal and at the second rate thereafter until the one signal starts or until expiration of the aforementioned extended time interval. The charges on the two capacitor circuits are compared; the largest residual charge indicates the speed of the object and its direction of travel.
