NOVEL PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF N,N-DIALKYL-SUBSTITUTED FATTY AMIDES REPRESENTED BY THE GENERAL FORMULA

WHEREIN R IS AN ALKYL RADICAL HAVING 1 TO 6 CARBON ATOMS AND R'' IS AN ALKYL RADICAL HAVING 1 TO 4 CARBON ATOMS, WHICH COMPRISES REACTING AT A TEMPERATURE IN THE RANGE OF 50 TO 1000*C. UNDER PRESSURE A NITRILE REPRESENTED BY THE GENERAL FORMULA R-CN, WHEREIN R HAS THE SAME MEANING AS DEFINED ABOVE, WITH AN ALCOHOL REPRESENTED BY THE GENERAL FORMULA R''-OH, WHEREIN R'' HAS THE SAME MEANING AS DEFINED ABOVE, THE ALCOHOL BEING EMPLOYED IN AN AMOUNT IN THE RANGE OF FROM 1.5 TO 10 MOLES OF ALCOHOL PER MOLE OF THE NITRILE, WITH OR WITHOUT EMPLOYING A CATALYST, AND RECYCLING AT LEAST A PART OF THE BY-PRODUCTS OF THE REACTION TO THE STARTING REACTION MIXTURE. UNDER PRESSURE HYDROGEN CYANIDE, WHICH IS UTTERLY DIFFERENT IN CHEMICAL BEHAVIOR FROM THE NITRILE, WITH AN ALCOHOL REPRESENTED BY THE GENERAL FORMULA R''-OH, WHEREIN R'' HAS THE SAME MEANING AS DEFINED ABOVE, THE ALCOHOL BEING EMPLOYED IN AN AMOUNT IN THE RANGE FROM 1.5 TO 10 MOLES OF ALCOHOL PER MOLE OF THE HYDROGEN CYANIDE, WITH OR WITHOUT EMPLOYING A CATALYST. IN THE LATTER PROCESS ALSO, THE YIELD MAY ADVANTAGEOUSLY BE IMPROVED BY RECYCLING AT LEAST A PART OF THE BY-PRODUCTS OF THE REACTION.
Abstract:
Basic aluminum chloride can be produced by allowing an aqueous solution of basic aluminum chloride or of aluminum chloride to exist in compartments bounded on anode side by anion-exchange membrane and on cathode side by cation-exchange membrane in an electrolytic cell in which anion-exchange membrane and cationexchange membrane are alternately disposed and allowing an aqueous solution of an electrolyte to exist in compartments adjacent to the said compartments and applying current through the electrodes to increase the basicity of the aqueous solution of basic aluminum chloride or of aluminum chloride. Such method does not require many electrodes, does not require high power and causes no generation of chlorine.

AN IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF N-ALKYL SUBSTITUTED LACTAMS USEFUL AS SOLVENTS BY HEATING A CYANHYDRIN REPRESENTED BY THE FORMULA HO(CH2)NCN WHEREIN N IS AN INTEGER OF 3 TO 5 INCLUSIVE TOGETHER WITH AN ALCOHOL REPRESENTED BY THE FORMULA ROH WHEREIN R REPRESENTS AN AKYL GROUP HAVING 1 TO 4 CARBON ATOMS AT A TEMPERATURE OF 250*C. TO 400*C. UNDER PRESSURE. THE PRESENT PROCESS GIVES AN IMPROVED YIELD OF THE DESIRED PRODUCT AT A LOW COST AS COMPARED WITH THE PRIOR ART PROCESS. THE PROCESS CAN BE ADVANTAGEOUSLY MODIFIED. ONE MODIFICATION CONSISTS IN THE PROCESS OF A SPECIFIC CATALYST. ANOTHER MODIFICATION CONSISTS IN THE PROCESS IN WHICH AS LEAST A PART OF THE BY-PRODUCTS ARE RECYCLED IN THE REACTION SYSTEM. STILL ANOTHER MODIFICATION CONSISTS IN THE PROCESS IN WHICH THE REACTION IS CONDUCTED IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER, THE WATER BEING ADDED AT THE TIME OF INITIATION OF THE REACTION. SUCH MODIFICATIONS GIVE A FURTHER IMPROVED YIELD OF THE DESIRED PRODUCT.
