Abstract: The present disclosure relates generally to illumination devices, systems, and methods for ophthalmic surgical procedures. Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide an illumination system which monitors and determines the amount of light delivered to a tissue within the ocular space, based upon data received from an imaging system. In certain aspects, if the amount of light delivered to the tissue is determined to be excessive, the illumination system may modify at least one parameter associated with the delivered light to reduce and/or eliminate phototoxic effects thereof. In certain aspects, if the amount of light delivered to the tissue is determined to be excessive, the illumination system may alert a surgeon, who may then trigger modification of the at least one parameter associated with the delivered light to reduce and/or eliminate phototoxic effects thereof.

Abstract: Methods are disclosed for operating a laser. Such methods may comprise operating the laser to emit electromagnetic energy in an infrared range in pulses with a pulse duration of greater than 1 ns. The wavelength of infrared electromagnetic energy may be in a range of about 2.6μ to about 3.3μ or about 1.8μ to about 2.1μ. The pulses may have a pulse energy selected to deliver an energy density of 2,500 J/cm3 or greater. The laser electromagnetic energy may be delivered for a medical application, such as cataract surgery to break apart a cataractous lens by photodisruption.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for in vivo pre-surgical characterization of lenses, such as cataractous lenses. A method comprises obtaining an electromagnetically-measured value related to the axial thickness of the lens, obtaining an ultrasound-measured value related to the axial thickness of the lens, calculating a relationship value based upon the electromagnetically-measured value and the ultrasound-measured value, and determining a mechanical property value based upon the calculated relationship value. The mechanical property may relate to lens hardness, rigidity, or density, or the amount of energy for a phacoemulsification procedure. A system may comprise an optical interferometer for measuring data to obtain the electromagnetically-measured value and an ultrasound biometer for measuring data to obtain the ultrasound-measured value.

Abstract: An ophthalmic device includes at least one ophthalmic lens and at least one diffractive structure for the at least one ophthalmic lens. The ophthalmic lens(es) have at least one base focal length and a base power for a first wavelength of visible light. The diffractive structure(s) have a chromatic aberration such that the diffractive structure(s) have a first power for the first wavelength of visible light and a second power for a second wavelength of visible light. A difference between the first power and the second power is at least two diopters.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates generally to surgical instruments, and more specifically, to ophthalmic surgical instruments and methods of making the same. In particular, a surgical instrument is provided. The surgical instrument includes a cannula. A spatula is formed at an end of the cannula. The spatula extends from the cannula at a non-zero angle relative to an exterior surface of the cannula. The spatula at least partially defines an aperture at the end of the cannula. An optical fiber extends along an interior of the cannula. The optical fiber is configured to direct laser light toward the spatula.

Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to systems and methods for laser power measurement, and more particularly, systems and methods for laser power measurement in a sterile operating environment. In certain embodiments described herein, power measurement is performed utilizing two laser sources: 1) a first laser source configured to generate a first laser beam (treatment laser); and 2) a second laser source configured to generate a second laser beam (test laser). The first laser beam generates a bubble in a test material (e.g., water, saline, balanced salt solution, gel, etc.) and the second laser beam is reflected back with the reflected portion of the second laser beam being measured to determine a lifetime of the bubble and correlate the lifetime measurement with a power measurement based on a correlation curve.
