Abstract: A computing device comprises a memory to store instructions and one or more processors operatively coupled to the memory. Execution of the instructions causes the one or more processors to calculate a quality metric for a region of interest in a received image of a face of a person that comprises a current dentition of the person, wherein data for pixels inside of the region of interest is used to calculate the quality metric, and wherein data for pixels of a second region that is outside of the region of interest is not used to calculate the quality metric; determine whether the quality metric satisfies a criterion; and responsive to determining that the quality metric satisfies the criterion, generate a modified version of the image, wherein the current dentition of the person is replaced with a post-treatment dentition of the person in the modified version of the image.

Abstract: A mobile device comprises a display, an image capture device that generates image data of a face of a viewer of the display, and a processing device. The processing device receives the image data and sends the image data to a computing device. The computing device processes the image data to identify a position of a dental arch in the image data; determines a treatment outcome for the dental arch; generates a post-treatment image of the dental arch that shows the treatment outcome; generates updated image data comprising a superimposition of the post-treatment image of the dental arch over the received image data; and sends the updated image data to the mobile device. The mobile device outputs the updated image data to the display, wherein the post-treatment image of the dental arch is superimposed over the dental arch in the received image data such that the post-treatment image is visible in the display rather than a true depiction of the dental arch.

A method may include capturing a first 2D image of a patient's face, including the patient's teeth, building a parametric 3D model of the patient's teeth and gingiva based on the first 2D image, developing a simulated outcome of a dental treatment of the patient's teeth by rendering the parametric 3D model with the patient's teeth in one or more positions and/or orientations corresponding to the treatment goals of the dental treatment plan, and rendering a second 2D image of the patient's face with gingiva and teeth according to a simulated outcome of the dental treatment plan. As noted herein, the dental treatment plan may include orthodontic and/or restorative elements. The simulated outcome may correspond to estimated outcomes and/or intended outcomes of the dental treatment plan.

Abstract: A method includes receiving an image of a face of a patient, the image including a depiction of teeth; processing the image of the face using one or more trained machine learning model, wherein the one or more trained machine learning model outputs a pixel-level classification of pixels in the image, the pixel level classification comprising a first set of pixels classified as being inside of a bounding shape that bounds a first plurality of teeth depicted in the image and a second set of pixels classified as being outside of the first bounding shape; cropping the image of the face of the patient, wherein the cropped image comprises depictions of the first plurality of teeth; and performing one or more operations on the cropped image of the face of the patient.

Abstract: A machine learning model is trained to define bounding shapes around teeth in images. The machine learning model is trained by receiving a training dataset comprising a plurality of images, each image of the plurality of images comprising a face and a provided bounding shape around teeth in the image. The training dataset is input into an untrained machine learning model. The untrained machine learning model is trained based on the training dataset to generate a trained machine learning model that defines bounding shapes around teeth in images, wherein for an input image the trained machine learning model is to output a mask that defines a bounding shape around teeth of the input image, wherein the mask indicates, for each pixel of the input image, whether that pixel is inside of a defined bounding shape or is outside of the defined bounding shape.

The method further includes generating the simulated color image of the post-treatment smile of the individual based on the blurred color representation of the estimated post-treatment arrangement of the teeth and the simulated colorless image of the estimated post-treatment arrangement of the teeth.

Abstract: Methods and systems for building a 3D model of teeth from a 2D image are provided, including: accessing a first 2D image depicting a patient's face and teeth; determining edges of one or more oral features in the first 2D image; obtaining an arch model including teeth with generic parameters; determining one or more case-specific parameters for a shape of at least one of the patient's teeth by fitting the teeth of the arch model to the edges of the one or more oral features in the first 2D image; generating a 3D parametric model of the patient's teeth by adjusting at least one of the teeth of the arch model based on the one or more case-specific parameters; and outputting the 3D parametric model or a second 2D image based on the 3D parametric model for display to a user on a display device.
