    Abstract: A photonic waveform generator and system is described. The photonic waveform generator is used in produce an electrical pulse having arbitrarily controllable temporal characteristics in a Fourier transform (FT) pulse shaper or a direct space-to-time (DST) photonic generator. The electrical pulse signal may be used in a radar, a telecommunications system or other electrical apparatus where the spectral and temporal characteristics of the signal are be optimized with respect to specific system needs, such as spectral occupancy, peak-to-average power, minimum pulse duration, target-to-clutter ratio, target type discrimination, and the like.

    Abstract: A system and method for programmable phase compensation of optical signals is disclosed. The systems and methods include the use of a polarization-independent spatial light modulator (PI-SLM) so that the state of polarization (SOP) of the incoming optical signal need not be known. The system includes a first dispersive module that spatially separates the optical signal into its frequency components. The frequency components are spread over the active area of the PI-SLM. The active area of the PI-SLM includes an array of independently programmable addressable regions capable of altering the phase of the light incident thereon. An exemplary application of the invention is chromatic dispersion compensation. By knowing the amount of chromatic dispersion in the optical signal, or alternatively, by knowing the amount of chromatic dispersion to be introduced into the optical signal downstream, the appropriate phase adjustments can be made to each frequency component of the signal. The phase-adjusted frequency components are then recombined via a second dispersive module to form a compensated optical signal.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method is disclosed for producing arbitrary optical and electrical waveforms. The apparatus includes a means for accepting or generating a comb-like optical spectrum, and an optical pulse shaper.     Abstract: A foldable, collapsible traffic display is storable in the flat, folded state and can be erected to form a three dimensional hollow triangle or box. The apparatus includes three rectangular panels connected together by two folding hinge portions and a holding means for locking the display in its erected state. According to one embodiment, the display includes a balast pocket in the central panel and a Velcro.RTM.-like holding means. An alternative embodiment employs tabs having a special geometry and male and female snap fasteners to lock the display in position. Warning indicia are printed on the panels and the erected display is preferrably oriented during use so that the appropriate warning is visible to oncoming traffic. The display may be turned inside-out and locked in the reverse mode so that the warning indicia on all six panels can be made visible to other motorists.
