    Abstract: A method and apparatus for converting nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide for the ultimate reaction with ozone to cause a chemiluminescent reaction, the intensity of which is a function of the nitric oxide concentration. The method comprises passing the nitrogen dioxide through a small, confined volume and applying concentrated heat to the volume in the presence of suitable amounts of vitreous carbon. In one preferred embodiment the apparatus includes a quartz container and a filament constructed of vitreous carbon. In an alternative embodiment, loose vitreous carbon or a vitreous carbon rod is confined within the quartz container, and heat is applied by a heated stainless steel or nichrome filament surrounding the quartz container.

    Abstract: A METHOD OF MEASURING THE NITRIC OXIDE CONCENTRATION IN A GAS STREAM IS DISCLOSED. THE GAS STREAM IS MIXED WITH OZONE AT THE ENTRANCE TO A REACTION CHAMBER SO THAT THE MIXTURE ENTERS THE REACTION CHAMBER AS A POINT SOURCE. THE INTENSITY OF THE LIGHT EMITTED AS A RESULT OF THE CHEMILUMINESCENT REACTION BETWEEN THE OZONE AND THE NITRIC OXIDE AT THE POINT SOURCE IS MEASURED. THE INTENSITY OF THE EMITTED LIGHT A FUNCTION OF THE NITRIC OXIDE CONCENTRATION IN THE GAS STREAM, WHEREBY THE NITRIC OXIDE CONCENTRATION IS MEASURED. APPARATUS FOR MEASURING THE NITRC OXIDE CONCENTRATION IN A GAS STREAM IS ALSO DISCLOSED. THE APPARTUS INCLUDES A WALLED VESSEL HAVING A REACTION CHAMBER AND HAVING TWO INLET PASSAGES AND AN EXHAUST PASSAGE IN THE WALL THEREFORE. THE TWO INLET PASSAGES CONVERGE TOGETHER TO A COMMON INLET OPENING INTO THE CHAMBER. A LIGHT WINDOW IS POSITIONED IN THE WALL OF THE CHAMBER OPPOSITE AND IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE COMMON INLET SO THAT THE LIGHT EMITTED BY A CHEMILUMINESCENT REACTION BETWEEN THE GASES AND THE TWO INLET PASSAGES AT THE COMMON INLET CAN BE MEASURED AS A POINT SOURCE. MEANS ARE ASSOCIALTED WITH THE LIGHT WINDOW FOR MEASURING THE LIGHT EMITTED BY THE CHEMILUMINESCENT REACTION.

    Abstract: Ammonia content of a gaseous mixture is determined by converting the ammonia to nitric oxide and measuring the nitric oxide. A gaseous mixture sample is passed through a heated mixture of oxides of platinum group metals and/or copper oxide together with vitreous carbon whereby any gaseous ammonia is converted catalytically into nitric oxide. Using the chemiluminescent analysis technique, the ammonia content of the gaseous mixture sample may be monitored in a suitable instrument.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for determining the nitric oxide content of a sample gas stream. The nitric oxide in the gas stream is reacted with an excess amount of ozone so as to completely convert the nitric oxide into nitrogen dioxide. The resulting gas containing nitrogen dioxide and residual ozone is passed through a scrubber which removes the ozone and does not affect the nitrogen dioxide content of the gas. The resulting gas is then analyzed for its NO2 content, which is a function of the nitric oxide content of the sample gas. The method and apparatus may also be utilized for determining the total amount of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide in a sample gas. The invention is particularly applicable to the monitoring of air for air pollution control.
