Abstract: A disc brake is disclosed which includes a housing defining a bore therewithin which is divided into two compartments by an annular wall. A first piston is slidably mounted in one of the compartments and is adapted to urge a friction member against a rotor upon a brake application. A second piston is mounted in the other compartment. Resilient means yieldably urge the second piston into engagement with the first piston and thereafter urge the first and second piston as a unit toward the rotor. The resilient means is normally opposed by fluid pressure to permit the first piston to apply the brakes of the vehicle when the latter is in motion and the vehicle hydraulic system is functioning normally.

Abstract: A vehicle antiskid braking system comprising a booster actuated master cylinder connected to the wheel brakes through a hydraulically actuated brake pressure modulator. The modulator is controlled by a solenoid valve which is responsive to vehicle wheel deceleration. Actuation of the solenoid valve causes the modulator to block communication between the master cylinder and brakes and to reduce the pressure at the brakes to allow the wheel to reaccelerate.

Abstract: AN ANTI-SKID BRAKING SYSTEM WHICH INCLUDES A MODULATOR FOR CONTROLLING COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE MASTER CYLINDER AND THE BRAKES. THE MODULATOR ALLOWS NORMAL COMMUNICATION UNTIL A SKID CONDITION IS SENSED. UPON SENSING THE SKID CONDITION, THE MODULATOR RELEASES FLUID PRESSURE FROM THE BRAKES UNTIL THE SKID CONDITION NO LONGER EXISTS AND, THEREAFTER, REAPPLIES THE FLUID PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES. THIS CYCLE IS REPEATED AS MANY TIMES AS THE SKID CONDITION IS SENSED.

Abstract: A hydraulic system for a motor vehicle having an open center type hydraulic power brake booster, an open center type hydraulic power steering gear, and an adaptive braking system using hydraulically powered brake line pressure modulators. The system includes a control valve receiving flow from an engine driven pump and a drive shaft driven pump delivering appropriate quantities of fluid to the brake booster and steering gear. They also deliver fluid at the correct pressure to the brake line pressure modulators upon receiving a pressure signal from the brake booster. Check valves are provided in the pump discharge lines to prevent backflow through a pump in the event of failure of the pump or its drive mechanism. The system control valve also includes pressure relief valves to limit pressures in the several systems to appropriate levels.
