Abstract: A multilayer image display device contains at least the following components arranged along a longitudinal extension direction from the rear toward the front in this order: a) a light source, b) a first liquid crystal layer, and c) a second liquid crystal layer. At least one polarization filter is assigned to the first liquid crystal layer and at least one polarization filter is assigned to the second liquid crystal layer. The light from the light source is furthermore guided through at least one optical and/or electro-optical retardation element before it reaches an observer.
