Abstract:
To reduce the noise caused by torsional reversals of a rotor hitting the phaser housing in a VCT cam timing system. A cam torque actuated phaser (phaser with check valves) the control loop is opened and rather then moving the spool valve to one end or the other end, the spool valve is moved just slightly off null. By doing this the oil ports in the spool passageways that control the motion of the phaser are restricted and the motion of the phaser is reduced. Therefore the noise of the phaser is reduced.
Abstract:
An on demand vehicle drive system monitors vehicle performance and operating conditions and controls torque delivery to the vehicle wheels. The system includes a plurality of speed and position sensors, a transfer case having primary and secondary output shafts driving primary and secondary axles and a microcontroller. The sensors include a vehicle speed sensor, a pair of primary and secondary drive shaft speed sensors, and brake and driveline status sensors. The transfer case includes a modulating electromagnetic clutch controlled by the microcontroller which is incrementally engaged to transfer torque from the primary output shaft to the secondary output shaft. When the speed of either the front or the rear drive shafts overruns, i.e., exceeds, the speed of the other drive shaft by a predetermined value related to the vehicle speed, indicating that wheel slip is present, clutch current is incrementally increased to increase clutch engagement and torque transfer to the secondary axle. When wheel slip is reduced below the predetermined value the current to the clutch is incrementally reduced. The method of operating such a system is also described.
Abstract:
A variable cam timing phaser for an internal combustion engine having at least one camshaft comprising a housing, a rotor, a spool valve, and a recirculation check valve. The housing and the rotor define at least one vane which separate chambers, advanced and retard. The spool valve comprises a spool having a plurality of lands mounted within a bore in the rotor. The spool is slidable from an advance position through a holding position to a retard position. The phaser also has an advance exhaust passage, a retard exhaust passage, and a return passage to route operating fluid to the chambers. The recirculation check valve is in the return passage and only allows flow of fluid from the advance chamber into the return passage when the spool is in the retard position and fluid from the retard chamber into the return passage when the spool is in the advance position.
Abstract:
A hydraulic tensioner includes a piston that is pivotally mounted to a tensioner arm. The piston is slidably received within a hollow body that is pivotally mounted to a mounting block or engine. In different embodiments, the body is mounted to the tensioner arm while the piston is biased against the mounting block or pivotally connected to the mounting block or engine.
Abstract:
In a cam torque actuated (CTA) system that has a crank shaft coupled to at least one cam shaft. The system has at least one timing gear associated with the crank shaft or a cam shaft. The timing gear includes at least two groups of toothlike projections including a first group having a first distance to the center of the wheel, and a second group having a second distance to the center of the wheel. The first distance is different from the second distance. Whereby torsional energy for torque actuated purposes is increased for the CTA system. The system may further include a resonator which is positioned upon the at least one cam shaft, the resonator including at least one mass and at least one elastic element. Whereby torsional oscillation of the at least one cam shaft at a predetermined engine speed range is increased.
