Abstract: 1,130,479. Fuel cells. COMPAGNIE GENEHALE D'ELECTRICITE. 10 April, 1967 [12 May, 1966], No. 16288/67. Heading H1B. In a fuel cell with a plurality of thin hollow electrodes of similar shape arranged parallel to each other at spaced intervals the electrodes being provided at their edges with at least one orifice for the supply and/or removal of gas are held, at least at the level of the orifice by tubular elements of plastics material, the axes of which are perpendicular to the mid-plane of the electrodes so that the orifices open into the interior of the tubular elements, each electrode also having a device for the pick-up of electrical current. As shown, the tubular elements 2 and 3 (e.g. of polyamide) communicate with alternate electrodes via metallic tips 6 inserted in the orifices 5. Leads 7 connected to the tips 6 convey current to the collectors 4 sealed into the tubular elements. One tube or element supplies oxidant to the oxidant electrodes and the other tube fuel to the fuel electrodes. The tubes are machined with one male end and one female end, the latter being fitted with a socket 9 and sealing ring 10 (Fig. 5, not shown) so that cell assemblies can be plugged together to form batteries. In operation the assembly or battery is immersed in a bath of electrolyte.
