Abstract: An article is described herein that includes: a substrate having a glass, glass-ceramic or a ceramic composition and comprising a primary surface; and a protective film disposed on the primary surface. The protective film comprises a thickness of greater than 1.5 microns and a maximum hardness of greater than 15 GPa at a depth of 500 nanometers, as measured on the film disposed on the substrate. Further, the protective film comprises a metal oxynitride that is graded such that an oxygen concentration in the film varies by 1.3 or more atomic %. In addition, the substrate comprises an elastic modulus less than an elastic modulus of the film.

Some key functional properties of the film include optical, electrical and/or mechanical properties. The bridging of a crack from one of the film or the glass substrate into the other of the film or the glass substrate can be prevented by inserting a crack mitigating layer between the glass substrate and the film.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are coated articles which may include a substrate and an optical coating that includes one or more layers of deposited material. At least a portion of the optical coating may include a residual compressive stress of more than 100 MPa. The coated article may include a strain-to-failure of 0.4% or more as measured by a Ring-on-Ring Tensile Testing Procedure. The optical coating may include a maximum hardness of 8 GPa or more and an average photopic transmission of 50% or greater.

Abstract: A strengthened article (and methods for making it) is provided that includes a glass, glass-ceramic or ceramic, having a plurality of primary surfaces, side edges, and a thickness. The article also includes a compressive stress region extending from one of the primary surfaces to a first selected depth in the article; a central region extending from a boundary located at a depth of 200 μm from the primary surfaces and the edges to the centroid of the article; and an outer region extending between the primary surfaces and edges to the boundary. Further, the maximum principal stress within the outer region is no more than two times the maximum principal stress within the central region. The primary surfaces and side edges may define a plurality of corners, and the corners may be defined by a chamfer, a fillet, or a curved shape.

In one or more embodiments, when a strain is applied to the article, the article exhibits a failure strain of 0.5% or greater. Patterned coating may include a particulate coating or may include a discontinuous coating. The patterned coating of some embodiments may cover about 20% to about 75% of the surface area of the substrate. Methods for forming such articles are also provided.

Abstract: A glass-based article may include from about 45 mol. % to about 80 mol. % SiO2; from about 0 mol. % to about 10 mol. % Na2O; less than about 5 mol. % K2O; a non-zero amount of Al2O; and an amorphous phase and a crystalline phase. The article may further in include a stress profile comprising a surface compressive stress (CS) and a maximum central tension (CT). A ratio of Li2O (mol. %) to R2O (mol. %) in the article is from about 0.5 to about 1, where R2O is the sum of Li2O, Na2O, and K2O in the article. CT may be greater than or equal to about 50 MPa and less than about 100 MPa. CS may be greater than 2.0·CT. A depth of compression (DOC) of the stress profile may be greater than or equal to 0.14·t and less than or equal to 0.25·t, where t is the thickness of the article.

Abstract: Embodiments of a glass-based article including a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface defining a thickness (t) of about 3 millimeters or less (e.g., about 1 millimeter or less), and a stress profile, wherein all points of the stress profile between a thickness range from about 0·t up to 0.3·t and from greater than 0.7·t, comprise a tangent that is less than about −0.1 MPa/micrometers or greater than about 0.1 MPa/micrometers, are disclosed. In some embodiments, the glass-based article includes a non-zero metal oxide concentration that varies along at least a portion of the thickness (e.g., 0·t to about 0.3·t). In some embodiments, the concentration of metal oxide or alkali metal oxide decreases from the first surface to a point between the first surface and the second surface and increases from the point to the second surface. The concentration of the metal oxide may be about 0.05 mol % or greater or about 0.5 mol % or greater throughout the thickness. Methods for forming such glass-based articles are also disclosed.
