Abstract: A support apparatus can comprise a cylindrical rod extending along a first rotation axis and comprising a first end portion provided with a first convex spherical segment and a second end portion provided with a second convex spherical segment. A first area can be configured to receive a portion of the first convex spherical segment. A second area can be configured to receive a portion of the second convex spherical segment. The cylindrical rod can be pivotable about a first pivot axis perpendicular to the first rotation axis. In some embodiments, methods of supporting an object can comprise engaging a surface of the object with the outer surface of the cylindrical rod wherein the first cylindrical rod supports a weight of the object while the first cylindrical rod is supported by the first fluid cushion and the second fluid cushion.

Abstract: A method of forming a shaped glass article includes placing a glass sheet on a mold such that a first glass area of the glass sheet corresponds to a first mold surface area of the mold and a second glass area of the glass sheet corresponds to a second mold surface area of the mold. The first glass area and the second glass area are heated such that the viscosity of the second glass area is 8 poise or more lower than the viscosity of the first glass area. A force is applied to the glass sheet to conform the glass sheet to the mold surface. During the heating of the second glass area, the first mold surface area is locally cooled to induce a thermal gradient on the mold.

Abstract: A carrier apparatus including a base including a plurality of peripheral portions, each peripheral portion including an inner surface facing an inner direction, at least one peripheral portion selectively moveable between an extended position and a retracted position, and an elastic member to bias the at least one peripheral portion into the retracted position such that the inner surfaces of the peripheral portions of the plurality of peripheral portions cooperate to circumscribe a retaining area. The carrier apparatus may include an article disposed in the retaining area. A fixture including a cavity for receiving the carrier apparatus may be provided. Methods of using, processing, and assembling the carrier apparatus may also be provided.

Abstract: An electrostatic chuck apparatus for chucking glass includes a substantially rigid chassis with a plurality of apertures extending from one side of the chassis to another side of the chassis. A plurality of electrostatic chuck pins extend through the openings and are resiliently mounted to the chassis such that the extent to which the electrostatic chuck pins extend through the chassis is individually variable. With this construction, the electrostatic chuck pins maintaining contact with the surface of the glass despite the presence of some variation in the localized surface flatness of the glass.
