Abstract: A cold-formed glass laminate may include a first ply of 3D formed glass with a first thickness and a first strength. The first ply may include pre-formed residual compressive stresses in a peripheral edge portion adapted to offset tensile stresses resulting from a cold-forming process. The laminate may also include a second ply of 3D formed glass with a second thickness less than the first thickness and a second strength greater than the first strength. An adhesive may be arranged between the first ply and the second ply and post-formed residual stresses in the peripheral edge portion of the first ply of the laminate may remain compressive. A method of forming a glass laminate with compressive edge stresses is also described.

The laminate includes a first curved glass substrate having a first major surface, a second major surface opposing the first major surface, a first thickness (h1), and a first viscosity (η1) of 1×1011 poises at a first temperature (T1); a second curved glass substrate having a third major surface, a fourth major surface opposing the third major surface, a second thickness (h2), the second thickness being less than the first thickness, and a second viscosity (η2) at the first temperature (T1); and an interlayer disposed between the first curved glass substrate and the second curved glass substrate, wherein the ratio of the first thickness to the second thickness (h1/h2) is greater than about 2.1, and wherein the ratio of the second viscosity to the first viscosity (η2/η1) is between about (h1/h2)2.55 and about (h1/h2)3.45.

A cold-forming estimator (CFE) value that is related to the stress experienced by a glass sheet of a glass laminate during cold-forming is calculated based on a plurality of geometric parameters of glass layer(s) of a glass laminate article. The calculated CFE value is compared to a cold-forming threshold related to the probability that defects are formed in the complexly curved glass laminate article during cold-forming. Cold-formed glass laminate articles are also provided having geometric parameters such that the CFE value is below the cold-forming threshold.

Abstract: A cold-formed glass laminate (100) may include a first ply (108) of 3D formed glass with a first thickness, a first strength, and a first coefficient of thermal expansion. The laminate (100) may also include a second ply (110) of 3D formed glass with a second thickness less than the first thickness, a second strength greater than the first strength, and a second coefficient of thermal expansion. The second coefficient of thermal expansion may be selected to be sufficiently higher than the first coefficient of thermal expansion to induce residual compressive stresses in the first ply (108) due to cold forming therewith. An adhesive layer (112) may be arranged between the first ply (108) and the second ply (110).

The sensing system includes optical componentry and a glass material, where the glass material at least in part houses the optical componentry and the glass material is at least partially transparent to light at the wavelength of the optical componentry. Further the glass material has mechanical and performance properties that allow the sensing system to be positioned particularly low on the vehicle, at a position that may be of higher risk for damage from debris.
