Abstract:
A system for monitoring patient intake includes an acquisition and transmission device having an electrode configured to detect vagus nerve activity. A first internal inductive coil is configured to communicate a signal indicative of the vagus nerve activity detected by the electrode to a second external inductive coil. The system also includes a processor configured to execute instructions stored in a memory that cause the system to process the signal received by the second induction coil into data corresponding to intake of the patient and communicate the data to a server that is accessible by a clinician.
Abstract:
An energy-based surgical device includes an elongated outer tube having a distal overhang, a proximal hub, a distal cutting member, and a flat spring. The distal cutting member has a U-shaped cutting edge and defines a mouth with the distal overhang extending therethrough. The flat spring includes a first portion extending distally along an exterior surface of the elongated outer tube and the distal overhang, a second portion extending from the first portion and bent over a free distal end of the distal overhang, and a third portion extending from the second portion proximally through the mouth of the distal cutting member and into the lumen of the elongated outer tube and traverses a majority of a diameter thereof. The distal cutting member and flat spring are adapted to connect to a source for electrosurgical energy for conducting bipolar energy through tissue disposed therebetween to cut tissue.

A biopsy device includes an ultrasonic probe, a display, an actuator, and a needle assembly. The display is associated with the ultrasonic probe, and the ultrasonic probe is configured to send a signal to the display to generate an image on the display. The needle assembly is coupled to the actuator and is at least partially disposed within a channel defined in the ultrasonic probe. The actuator is configured to move the needle assembly in a distal direction relative to the ultrasonic probe and through the channel of the ultrasonic probe from a retracted position to a deployed position.
Abstract:
A surgical instrument includes a housing having a shaft affixed thereto, a reciprocatable drive rod slideably disposed at least partially within the shaft, and a force applicator coupled to the drive rod. The shaft includes first and second jaw members attached to a distal end thereof, at least one of which movable relative to the other from a first position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to at least a second position closer to one another wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. The force applicator and the drive rod mechanically communicate to impart movement to at least one of the jaw members. The bipolar forceps includes a handle assembly and a force-balance interface. The force-balance interface configured to translate a multiple of the user-applied force exerted on the handle assembly into the jaw members.
Abstract:
Surgical instruments and surgical systems including the surgical instrument and a morcellator. The surgical instrument includes a tool assembly having an articulating joint and a screw positioned at a distal end of the articulating joint. The articulating joint is configured to articulate a distal portion of the tool assembly at an angle in relation to the longitudinal axis of the surgical instrument. The screw is configured to engage tissue, for example, a myoma in the uterine wall of a patient, and is configured to pitch and roll the tissue to expose cutting planes. The morcellator is configured to engage the tissue to morcellate the tissue and remove the tissue from a patient.
Abstract:
A morcellation system includes a morcellator and a grasper. The morcellator includes a housing and a tube extending from the housing and having at least one blade section. The morcellator further includes an oscillating mechanism configured to oscillate the tube. An end cap is coupled to the proximal end of the housing and is configured to receive the tube. The end cap defines a passage and includes an aligning structure disposed in the passage. The grasper includes a tubular member having a grasping end including first and second jaws moveable relative to one another. The grasper further includes a handle assembly operatively associated with the grasping end. A keyed collar is disposed about the tubular member. The keyed collar includes a key configured to cooperate with the aligning structure of the end cap to align the first and second jaws relative to the distal end of the tube.
Abstract:
A method for treating a sinus cavity is provided. The method includes the steps of inserting a plasma applicator into a sinus cavity defined in a bone mass, positioning the plasma applicator adjacent a tissue formation, generating a selectively reactive plasma effluent at the plasma applicator and directing the selectively reactive plasma effluent at the tissue formation. The selective nature of the reactive plasma enables treatment of specific targets inside the sinus while minimizing the effect on other tissues. Such treatment includes, but not limited to, sterilization of bacterial colonies, vaporization of unwanted tissues or foreign masses, stimulation of tissues by enriching the content of reactive oxygen and nitrous oxide pathways, and combinations thereof.
Abstract:
An endoscopic forceps is disclosed including an end effector assembly having two jaw members movable from a first position in spaced relation relative to one another to at least a second position closer to one another for grasping tissue therebetween. Each of the jaw members is connectable to an electrosurgical energy source for conducting energy through tissue held therebetween. The jaw members are biased to the first position. The end effector assembly of the endoscopic forceps further includes a wire snare having a proximal end connectable to an electrosurgical energy source and a distal end translatably extending out of one of the jaw members and operatively associated with the other of the jaw members. In use, withdrawal of the proximal end of the wire snare results in movement of the jaw members from the first position to a second position and clamping of the tissue between the jaws.
Abstract:
A system for simulating thoracoscopic lung surgery includes a surgical device and a display for displaying the simulated thoracoscopic lung surgery. The system predicts the effect the surgical device would have on actual tissue and displays a visual representation of the tissue and the effect a manipulation of the surgical device would have on the tissue.
