Abstract: An internal combustion engine system is described herein. The system uses a reactor to create pilot fuel from the primary fuel to assist in the ignition of the primary fuel. The system uses one or more heaters to increase the temperature of the primary fuel to an operational temperature of a reactor used to convert the primary fuel in a dehydration reaction. The heaters use waste heat generated by the operation of the engine. The waste heat can be lubricant used to remove heat from components of the engine as well as heat from the exhaust of the engine, for example. A controller is used to maintain an operational range of a level of the pilot fuel in an accumulator. The accumulator acts as a buffer to allow the engine to continue to receive the pilot fuel during dynamic and changing conditions of the engine.

Abstract: A combustion system for an internal combustion engine includes combustion chamber that is defined between a cylinder head and a top surface of a piston. The combustion system also includes a fuel injector having an injector tip. The injector tip defines a nozzle disposed in fluid communication with the combustion chamber for dispensing a fuel jet into the combustion chamber. A bluff body is positioned within the combustion chamber such that an axis of the dispensed fuel jet is incident on an anterior portion of the bluff body proximal to the injector tip. The anterior portion has a contour that is adapted to split the dispensed fuel jet into at least two turbulent fuel streams and facilitate mixing of each fuel stream with an oxidant present in the combustion chamber.

Abstract: A combustion system for an internal combustion engine includes a cylinder having a cylinder wall defining a bore, a piston disposed inside the bore, a combustion chamber delimited by a cylinder head, the cylinder wall, and the piston. The piston includes a piston bowl defining a floor portion, and at least one scooped recess extending radially outwardly from a periphery of the piston bowl. The internal combustion engine further includes a fuel injector configured to inject fuel into the combustion chamber as a plurality of fuel jets at a main injection timing such that each fuel jet contacts the floor portion of the piston bowl and follows a profile of the piston bowl and enter the at least one scooped recess. Furthermore, at least one of the plurality of is deflected by the at least one scooped recess away from the cylinder wall.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder case forming a cylinder bore having a centerline and an inner bore surface. A piston disposed within the cylinder bore forms a crown surface. A region defined between the piston and the cylinder bore in a radial direction has an annularly shaped mouth opening surrounding the crown surface. A cylinder head is disposed to cover an open end of the cylinder bore such that a variable volume is defined within the cylinder bore between the cylinder head and the piston. The cylinder head also forms a flame deck in fluid contact with the variable volume. A deflector structure forms a portion of the inner bore surface adjacent the flame deck surface, and is disposed between the flame deck and a topmost ring seal groove of the piston when the piston is at a TDC position.

Abstract: Operating an internal combustion engine system includes feeding a stream of pressurized intake air to a plurality of cylinders in an engine for combustion with a methanol fuel. An engine parameter indicative of at least one of an exhaust NOx level or a change to the exhaust NOx level of the engine is monitored, and water injected into an intake conduit for the engine based on the monitored engine parameter to limit the exhaust NOx level of the engine. Abstract: A controller may obtain data indicative of heat release in a cylinder of an engine. The controller may determine that the data indicative of the heat release in the cylinder is indicative of clogging of one or more ducts of a duct structure of the engine. The controller may perform an operation to reduce the clogging of the one or more ducts based on the data indicative of the heat release in the cylinder being indicative of the clogging of the one or more ducts. The operation may include at least one of causing a pressure of fuel that is supplied to a fuel injector to increase or causing a peak temperature in the cylinder to increase.

Abstract: A device that includes a window, a catalyzed layer, and a laser source is disclosed. The window may include a first surface and a second surface. The catalyzed layer may be disposed on the first surface of the window. The catalyzed layer may include a compound having a threshold transmittance, and be configured to cause a reaction with soot in one or more of a combustion chamber or a pre-combustion chamber of a combustion engine at an activation temperature to reduce accumulation of soot on the window. The laser source may be disposed relative to the second surface of the window, and configured to emit a laser beam through the window and the catalyzed layer. The laser beam may be configured to cause ignition of an intake charge of one or more of the combustion chamber or the pre-combustion chamber.
