Abstract: An optical cable includes a central strength member. A buffer tube, surrounding at least one optical fiber, is SZ stranded around the strength member. An air gap exists between adjacent lays of the buffer tube as the buffer tube follows a SZ stranding path along the strength member. The buffer tube has a diameter and occupies a first angular portion of the three hundred sixty degrees surrounding the strength member, and the air gap occupies a second angular portion of the three hundred sixty degrees surrounding the strength member, which is greater than the first angular portion. At least one element holds the buffer tube in the SZ stranding path along the strength member, and an outer jacket surrounds the at least one element, the buffer tube and the strength member.

Abstract: A cable clamp includes a shell having a shell base, a first sidewall and a second sidewall forming a channel extending in a first direction to receive a cable therein. A wedge resides between the first and second sidewalls and includes a wedge base facing the shell base. A shim resides between the wedge base and the shell base, and the cable fits between the shim and the shell base. Movement of the shell relative to the wedge causes the cable to engage more tightly between the shim and the shell base. In one embodiment, a blade element resides between the shim and the shell base. The blade may be a separate element from the shim or attached to or integrally formed with the shim. The wedge may include a recessed area or a cutout portion to accommodate the blade. A cutting edge of the blade element faces toward the cable and will cut the cable in response to an excessive force along the first direction being applied to the cable within the channel.

Abstract: A multi-member cable includes at least a first cable element and a second cable element. The first and second cable elements may extend in parallel, be stranded in a helical winding pattern, or be stranded in a reverse-oscillatory winding pattern, along the length of the cable. At least one binder is helically wrapped about the first and second cable elements to hold them together. The binder is formed of a material which disintegrates when exposed to a particular liquid or heat. In a preferred embodiment, the binder may be formed of polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA).
