A process has been developed to produce a transparent graft polymer composition directly in bead form from a butadiene based rubber latex, styrene and methyl methacrylate using a combination of emulsion and suspension polymerization steps.

THE MELT FLOW OF RUBBER-MODIFIED POLYSTYRENE, ABS AND THE LIKE IS CONTROLLED BY CONTACTING POLYMERIZABLE VINYL MONOMERS WITH A CHELATING AGENT SUCH AS ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRACETIC ACID AND A MERCAPTAN CHAIN REGULATOR SUCH AS TERTIARY DODECYL MERCAPTAN IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER AND POLYMERIZING THE RESULTING MIXTURE.

ABS RESINS HAVE IMPROVED STABILITY AGAINST DEGRADATION DUE TO HEAT AND OXYGEN BY ADDITION OF A BALANCED STABILIZER COMPOSITION WHICH MAINTAINS INITIAL COLOR AND IMPACT STRENGTH, MINIMIZES MELT FLOW CHANGES, AND REDUCES TENDENCY FOR CARBONYL FORMATION IN THE ABS RESIN DURING LONG TERM HEAT AGING (LTHA). THIS COMPOSITION COMPRISES FOR EXAMPLE, 0.05 TO 1.0 PERCENT OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING CONSTITUENTS;
(1) DLTDP, (2) 2,6-DI-T-BUTYL-4-METHYLPHENOL, (3) 2,2''-METHYLENEBIS (4-ETHYL-6-T-BUTYLPHENOL), AND (4) AN EPOXY COMPOUND DERIVED FROM SOYBEAN OIL OR BY THE CONDENSATION OF AN ETHYLENE OXIDE WITH A HYDROXYCONTAINING COMPOUND.
